Marty McFly’s 1985 Toyota SR5 Pickup
While plenty of attention has been lavished on the DeLorean, another vehicle from the “Back to the Future” movie franchise, one which made essentially a cameo appearance, has remained largely ignored. The vehicle in question is a 1985 Toyota SR5 Pickup. It would eventually become Marty McFly’s daily driver, but was only seen briefly during the three movies. The owner of this Toyota has created a faithful replica and is offering it for sale with No Reserve. What makes this one special is that the seller will divert part of the proceeds from the sale to research into finding a cure for Parkinson’s Disease. Given the plight of Michael J Fox, it seems appropriate and makes this classic worthy of a closer look. This SR5 is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has been listed for sale here on eBay. Frantic bidding has pushed the price to $69,700, and with No Reserve in play, someone could be parking this cool 4×4 under their Christmas tree.
This Toyota presents superbly in its original but sinister Black. The owner has done a sterling job recreating Marty McFly’s 4×4, down to the correct wheels, nudge bar, and driving lights. The paint exhibits a deep shine, with no issues or problems. There is some scuffing in the bed, but it isn’t severe. Black paint can be good at revealing flaws in the steel that hides beneath, but these panels seem to be laser straight. The rollbar adds a purposeful look to the exterior, while the trim and glass appear flawless. This Toyota may not be as recognizable as the DeLorean, but those in the know will instantly recognize what this vehicle is whenever it hits the streets.
Turning our attention to the interior, and the news remains positive. It is common for 4x4s of this era to begin to look tired and worn due to the lives that they tend to live. That fate hasn’t befallen this Toyota. The combination of cloth and vinyl upholstery on the seats shows no evidence of wear or staining, while the door trims are equally impressive. There are no marks or issues with the carpet, and the plastic trim is free from the deterioration that comes with exposure to UV rays. One deviation from Marty McFly’s 4×4 is the inclusion of a CD player. Otherwise, this interior is as it left the factory. It features air conditioning, a tilt wheel, and a gauge cluster that includes a factory tachometer. It appears to need nothing, making this a classic that is ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
This Toyota SR5 is about far more than rugged good looks. Its engine bay is occupied by the fuel-injected 22R-E four-cylinder engine that produces 105hp and 136 ft/lbs of torque. That power finds its way to the road via a five-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case that provides the SR5 with excellent off-road abilities. The vehicle appears to be in sound mechanical health, with an engine bay that presents perfectly. The buyer won’t merely be receiving this truck because the seller includes a hoverboard, shoes, a Gray’s Sports Almanac, a framed poster, and a 1/10th scale Pickup model.
It goes without saying that the current bid on this 1985 Toyota SR5 is well beyond market value. You only have to look at the bidding history to realize how this 4×4 has touched the hearts and minds of potential buyers. It isn’t unusual to see eBay listings that receive double-digit bidding, but this Toyota has already received 140 bids. Those who are staking their claim on this classic can be sure that the charity will spend the money wisely. Is that enough to make you consider throwing your hat into the ring?

Wow! This is the Toyota that started it all for me. I was a kid when the movie came out but It was live at first sight for me with the pickup, much like it was for Marty Mcfly. From then on I wanted a black Toyota pickup. I finally purchased a brand new Black Tundra in 2012 but it wasn’t as cool as this thing. I have a white Tacoma now, also not as cool, but I’ll bet both trucks are much nicer to drive and easier to live with than this though. I hear these are dogs on the road. Impressive but not surprising bidding. GLWTA
My father also suffered from Parkinson’s now along with my sister’s husband currently. I really wish I had the financial wherewithal to push the bid price higher. Unfortunately, my piggy bank makes an empty echo sound whenever I shake it.
this was recently run through Mecum auction and saw a high bid of 50k
For that price, you should get the original movie truck with documentation. A replica? Seventy grand? P.T. Barnum was right. There’s a sucker born every minute
What part of replica did the bidders not see?
The original truck was off the lot at Puente Hills Toyota. (I worked at the sister dealership at the time) (Almost next door to Puente Hills Mall (otherwise known as Twin Pines Mall)
These were good reliable trucks and a good one is still worth a decent amount of money for a 36 year old truck. If it was the original truck, then ok. But a replica for this money???? I don’t see it.
Ouch! $70k you can buy much more. It should be called Back to the Bank!
Here’s the original, post from neighbor’s restoration shop web page: http://www.gregsrestorations.com/back_to_the_future_toyota_pickup.html
This is so 80s I love it! Not at that price of course
Sold $69,700. WOW!!
The reason you don’t see these anymore is because they rusted out really quickly, which was too bad because they were really good trucks.
Ya no kidding and if they weren’t eaten by rust they were rode hard and put up wet. I’ve seen plenty head to Latin America. huge market there. I’m lucky and have 3 of these.
Radwood….we have a winner!
Okay, I cropped the truck out of picture three in the auction. Why? As a tribute to the seasoned members here. Remember the Hamm’s (the beer refreshing!) Scene-o-rama (aka rippler) signs?
Nice truck but not almost 70k nice. The person that paid that kind of money for a 36 year old toyota 4×4 must have alot of disposable income. I just don’t see it.
Beautiful looking Toyota SR5 truck. I remember the “Back to the Future” franchise of movies. My favourite of the three movies were 1 and 2.
Insane pricing!
I wonder if my neighbor can get $25,000 for his Tercel??
