Pony Ready to Ride: 1969 Mustang Mach 1

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you’re in the market for a surviving original Mach 1 that’s both already a runner and ready to rebuild, then the one found here on eBay might be the perfect fit. This Pony is still in San Diego with its 3rd owner, who hates to part with the California Black Plate native that currently (at $25k) has not hit it’s reserve.

If you’re a Pony fan, then you are surely familiar with this magical year for Mustangs – and American Muscle cars overall. 1969 brought us not just the Mach 1, but the GT, the Boss 302 and 429, and of course Shelby America’s GT350 and GT500 offerings. Imagine having an extra million and a half dollars (or so) to put a mint collectible version of each in your garage!

What I love about this find is its simple survival – it seems to have all the interior and exterior Mach 1 items in place. The owner claims it’s an early 1969 – which is more noted by the absence of brand markings, then markings themselves. He says, “It has…the earliest Mach1 stripe that is hand painted, not a decal and has no mach1 lettering on the sides and trunk lid.” He’s referring to the italic influenced “Mach 1” at the very beginning of most Mach 1 decals. In this early version, it’s notably missing and the stripe flows from the front wheel well to back.

A bonus for the collector of this ‘stang is the history and provenance that the related paperwork brings: The original bill of sale, maintenance notes starting at purchase, owner’s manual, radio manual, warranty posting, registration slips throughout the decades, and even Montgomery Ward’s tire receipts from 1971. If you’re old enough to remember Montgomery Ward (at one time a massive national retailer), then you’re old enough to admire and desire what a great car this was, and still is, today!

Great info on the early production differences and my favourite color.

That IS a beautiful color. Is that Winter Blue or Brittany Blue maybe? Whichever one it is, it is definitely easy on the eyes. Sometimes it’s nice to see something besides bright Mopar colors or green. Wish I could buy this one…..

Liked the 61 and 62’s better. Shame the car didn’t come out until 1965! These sites really need to hire proof readers at the very least.

Yep – sorry everyone on the headline. The darn “9” keys and “0” keys are so close!

Believe me, if there was a 1960 Mustang out there – one of all of us would have it!

Friend of mine had this car, same color in high school. He knew his dad would never tolerate the 428 it was packing so he managed to change the call outs on the shaker to 351 before dad saw it. He executed the most awesome burn out I have ever seen one night leaving a party. Studded snow tires on a concrete street with youthful exuberance, big block v-8 and some adult beverages puts on quite a show. The sparks were amazing. He still lives in the neighbor hood. The Mustang didn’t last long.

One of my buds had one of those too; hopped it up a bit, and put some monster wide rear tires on it. It was obvious who had done a huge burnout on the street leading into our no-outlet neighborhood. There wasn’t another car in the county that could leave black stripes of that width!

Ha! For the record, the old man’s ’65 Old’s 98 did some awesome burnouts with studded snow tires, they spun pretty easy on dry roads. They sure did a lot of damage to the roads in Wisconsin until they were outlawed.

My family always referred to that massive chain retailer as “monkey” wards, don’t know why.
Nice looking mustang, arguably the best body style Ford came up with for the pony, ever.

They still allow studded snows here in NH. I’m surprised how many cars I hear with them mounted.
A Honda Accord drove by the other day with them mounted. And I don’t live in the mountains.
I run studdable snows on my RWD Charger and don’t encounter any serious traction issues.

Another iconic car, the ’69 Mustang. Kind of the last of the “original” type Mustangs, as they kind of lost it in the ’70’s. These are my favorite Mustangs, now as an old man, I can’t figure out why I never owned one ( had an ’88 5.0 and a ’95 V6) Such a cool dash too, nice car.

Only one problem with you early Mach 1 is the it came with a 351 Windsor and even though it didn’t become a Mach 1 until the following model year it still had honey come Wheels and Grill let you know that the Mach 1

For my money, 69 was a magical year for the Mustangs and Camaros when everything came together. The 69 Sportsroof style was always my favorite Mustang.

Seller says it was his dream car then why is he selling?? I don’t get people sometimes. I went through some seriously hard times and still have my high school 70 mach. This is a super nice, solid mach! If this your ultimate ride why wont you make sacrifices to keep it?? Can’t people knuckle down and grind through the hard times and hang on!? I wound up eating rice and bread for a year and I still have my high school ride. Till death for us part! I have a TMI aluminum block being built for it. I will complete it in two years and will have the ride of my life!
I don’t know, sometimes we give up to easily if the dollar signs get too big. Not me, I will finish my dream car no matter what the cost! I really look forward to cruising just like 30 years ago!

We don’t know the circumstances so there is no need to deride the fellow. Maybe being his dream car, he got stars in his eyes & gave more than he can afford. Maybe he just wants to be out of debt & figures he can buy another later when he can afford it better. Maybe he is getting layed off from his job & would rather sell the car than lose the house. Maybe his wife is having a baby & they have no maternity insurance. Or maybe his widowed mother needs 24 hour care. Whatever the reason, I’m sure to him, it’s the right thing to do & it’s not to us to make judgments…

I am sure the owner hates to have to sell this beautiful car, maybe it’s his only asset and needs money to live. I would love to own it!
Somebody will end up with I very nice Southern California dream car.
