Parked in ’72: 1957 Chevrolet 3600 Barn Find

Hey, how about another ’57 Chevy? You know, the third and final member of the Tri-Five triumvirate? Well, here you go, a ’57 Chevrolet 3600 step-side pickup. Yeah, not what you were expecting but maybe one that you would prefer to review. This Chevy truck is located in Wahoo, Nebraska and is available here on eBay for a current bid of $4,050 with seventeen bids tendered so far.

Probably having spent most of its life in truck servitude, the seller states, “Underneath the truck is very solid. Has rust as you can see from the pics“. Yes, there is rust but it seems reasonable in terms of its scope and depth but the driver’s side fender is going to need some fabrication patches at the least. The body has a few contusions but they appear to be minor and the trim, bumpers, grille, etc, are all still in place. An owner, somewhere in the past, constructed stake sides with a rear gate and they surround what looks like an original wooden cargo bed, one that’s in surprisingly good condition. It’s also nice to see images from the “before and after” the barn-bound slumber –  cleaned up is not going to detract from its value.

A 140 HP, 235 CI, in-line, six-cylinder engine provides the hauling power with a four-speed manual transmission. The seller adds, “Runs smooth. All gears shift. We put new radiator hoses on and she cools great. Will need the typical break work, belts, and gas tank cleaned. We just ran a gas can with a hose right to the fuel pump and it worked perfect. Runs and idles good”. The seller mentions that he has the air cleaner assembly.

The interior is utilitarian, just as one would expect for a 64-year-old truck. The hard vinyl upholstery looks like it’s ready for more rough-and-ready use. The single gauge instrument panel still appears to be clear and there was even a radio installed at one point (one that required some minor cutting). There is surface rust evident in places, across the floor in particular, but none of it looks to be overly corrosive or deteriorated to a rotted-through condition. Also, note the door jambs, they are painted gray like the rest of the interior steel surfaces, is that evidence of the originally exterior shade?

The seller opens the listing with, “No title. wouldn’t be hard to get one” That remains to be seen – depends on where you’re trying to register this ’57 Chevy truck. The originality of this old farm truck is its calling card, it’s a non-messed-with example, not that common a find these days. So, it’s now what to do with it time. Being a 3/4 ton capacity it could be driven with some regularly without too much strong-arming or completely wound out at 50 MPH. So, should it be refurbished as a safe original style runner, hot-rod modified, rat-rodded, or…what’s your flavor?

Crap, that was a steal. Hardly any of the usual rust. Was worth almost worth twice that from the prices I see.

Utilitarian is a good word for this truck. These workhorse trucks were tough as nails. An older mechanic left a 57 Fleetside on a place I bought, but it was too far gone to do anything with unfortunately. Seems like this one didn’t take long to sell and looks like it sold at a fair price. Good find.
