This 1966 Impala 2-Door Hardtop has been in the same family since new, and it has spent the last 15 years of its life parked in this shed. The family has decided that it’s time to part with the car, so they have listed it for sale here on Craigslist. The Impala is located in Treynor, Nebraska, and is offered with a clean title. The photos that the seller provides in the ad don’t give us a huge amount to work with, and I don’t think that the shed that the car is in would offer a lot of protection from the elements. If we couple these facts with the fact that the car is wearing snow tires, and that doesn’t bode well. However, the car actually looks surprisingly good, especially considering the strikes that it has against it. There is certainly rust present, but it doesn’t look particularly extensive. There is a bit of rust visible around the wheel arches, a bit in the lower quarter panels that looks like it could be patched, and a small amount in the lower corners of the doors, but that’s all that is visible. We don’t get any information about the condition of the floors or the frame, but what we see is relatively positive.

The interior doesn’t look pretty, but this may be a case of looks being deceiving. Yes, the dash pad is cracked, and the cover on the front seat has been shredded, but I think that the vast majority of the interior trim could be salvaged. The rear seat is pretty bad, but I think that it could be cleaned, and the rest of the plastic trim also looks like it might clean up okay. There are a few minor items, such as armrests, which may need to be replaced, but thankfully, it doesn’t look like anyone has hacked into the interior trim or dash to fit an aftermarket stereo or speakers.

I would like one dollar for every time that I’ve heard the phrase, “ran when parked.” The Impala is just such a car, but that was 15-years-ago. The engine is a 283ci V8, backed by a 3-speed manual transmission. The car is also fitted with power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning. The owner doesn’t indicate whether the engine turns freely, but as someone once said, hope springs eternal. These engines are relatively bullet-proof, so if it does turn freely, then it may not take much to get it up and running. We’ve all seen engines that have been sitting for twice as long as this brought back to life, so you never know.

This is a car that I would like to have a good look at. I’d test the engine to see if it turns, and I’d take a look underneath to see what the frame and floors are like. Even if the engine is stuck, it may free up fairly easily. This car has some potential, but its viability hinges on the state of the frame. With nice 283 equipped examples currently fetching $20,000 plus, this could be a viable project car.
