Paint Patina Or Pass? 1975 AMC Pacer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller concentrates on the letter “P” in the description for this patina-heavy 1975 AMC Pacer and they do a nice job of it. This perfectly patina’d Pacer can be perused here on eBay in Snohomish, Washington with a $2050 buy it now price.

Yep, this Pacer has perfect patina. Or, as some would say, heavy surface rust, but that isn’t quite as poetic. Did I also mention that aside from what they say is a little rust, this car isn’t running at the moment? They haven’t tried very hard to get it running, from what it sounds like.

The AMC Pacer was reportedly 37% glass and you can really tell that from this angle. If this car had a nice, shiny paint job.. well, it would still be a Pacer. Ha, no, I’m kidding, I love Pacers. They say that the surface rust/patina is about the worst of the rust but there is a photo showing some rust-through but I’m not sure where it’s located.

The interior needs work, too. Parts of it are still in nice shape and might look great with a good cleaning, especially the back seat area. You have to love that 1970s pattern on the seats! The seller has provided dozens of good photos and they get a huge gold star for that. They show everything top to bottom and even the rear hatch area which also shows some surface rust.

This non-running-at-the-moment engine is AMC’s 232 cubic-inch inline-six according to the VIN. It would have pumped out around 100 hp. Hopefully this car can be saved, it sure would turn some heads with how it looks now. The question of the day: paint, patina, or pass?

A dustless blasting would do this car good.

Only one way to go on this one, Wayne’s World clone.

The battery top looks like the shiniest thing on this car.

Don’t let that guy from Arizona get a hold of this, he’ll kill it for sure. 31K miles, pfft, these people should be selling lots in Florida, and no bids, nobody else is falling for that either. It’s a shame I bet $1500 would get this, and could be a fun car,,,except nobody wants it. Pacers were good cars.

Well, it sold for $820 so I think someone got a pretty good deal. Must be at least one person out there who wants one.

I’d pass on this one. I think Dana Garvey would too.

Carvey. Dana Carvey. Or Mike Myers. Neither are noted gearheads.

Criticize the humble Pacer all you like, I love the oddballs of the automotive world. $2K is a bit of a long reach for a non-runner that’s this needy. $500 would be top dollar

Patina? if it were a 55 then yeah. 75?…abuse. They ran it through car washes too many times. If they had extensive documentation on the mileage then maybe. But as stated, this is a $500-$1,000 car
    EDIT
I was just looking at the photos, Unless that some kind of vent area, the front sub assy on the right side is rusted through. If so, this is a parts car at best. (3rd photo)
ALSO – see the rust on the shifter?

Harsh words in the comments. Whoever bought this got it at a reasonable price, but what will they do with it? That is the question.

It’s just a boring, dull car in poor condition. Pacers got harsh comments when they were new. I would imagine this got bought by some retired guy to ‘fix ‘er up!’ and when his wife saw it in the driveway she either sighed or screamed.

Boring and dull compared to what? Other cars of the era or a Ferrari Dino? I’d much rather have one of these than a Pinto or Vega, which would be a fair comparison, I think. You could resto-mod one of these things into something really cool, and definitely different. Modern engine, suspension, brakes, etc. would make for a pretty sweet ride.

    No.
    Just no.

I don’t understand why BF writers continually misspell “rust.” It doesn’t begin with a “P.”
