Psychedelic Project: 1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula
The seller states that this 1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula is green but the cab is white and the inside of the front fenders are blue. Regardless, this is a project car and the new buyer will be able to paint it whatever color they want. The VIN of this car confirms that it is a Formula. Pontiac offered 4 models of the second generation Firebird – a base Firebird, Esprit, Formula and Trans Am. The Firebird Formula is listed here on eBay with 3 days remaining. The car is currently bid to $3,000 and is located in Manahawkin, New Jersey.
The engine code on the VIN indicates that this Firebird Formula left the factory with a L78 400 cubic inch V8 engine fed by a 4 barrel carburetor. The engine was rated at 250 horsepower and 320 lb ft of torque. When equipped with an automatic transmission, the car was only available with a 3.08:1 rear end ratio. For 1972, it looked like horsepower was decreased by GM but, in reality, GM would publish only net horsepower figures (horsepower produced at the drive shaft with all accessories rather than at the crank). While engines were nearly identical from 1971 to 1972, the published gross horsepower for the 455 HO dropped from 335 to the net rating of 300hp. This change was an attempt to trick insurance companies from levering high rates for higher horsepower cars.
The black interior is torn, worn and dirty. The seller states that the car will run if it is jump started and carburetor spray is added to the carburetor. There is a lost of surface rust on the body panels and undercarriage. The seller says the rust is limited and that the underside is pretty solid. The primary difference of a 1972 Firebird from 1970, 1971 and 1973 which have the same front end is the elongated honeycomb grille. This was a one year only feature. A small bird emblem made its appearance on the front fender ahead of the Firebird script for the first time. High back bucket seat were available for the second year in a row.
The 1972 production of the Firebird witnessed a significant reduction owing to a prolonged United Auto Workers strike at the Norwood Ohio plant, the sole production facility for Firebird and Camaro. The strike, lasting 174 days until its conclusion on September 27, 1972, halved the Firebird’s production from 53,124 units in 1971 to a mere 29,951 in 1972. Additionally, 1,100 unfinished vehicles were scrapped on the assembly line, since the 1972 models could not meet the new crash impact regulations enforced for 1973. Many think that the convergence of the strike and a decline in pony car sales nearly led Pontiac to discontinue the Firebird line in 1972.

What is the dry ice thing ?
My favorite year, but not this one. I went to school with a guy that had one in burnt orange with a white interior and brown dash and carpets. His was a stick shift and had power windows and tilt wheel. Sadly that car never made it to its tenth birthday.
This is a fantastic start to build rare classic not many true formula 400s left I have a tribute that’s worth $50k
Had a 75 formula 400 loved that car wish I still had obviously
