May I be candid with you? Somebody, anybody, needs to buy this ’62 Studebaker GT Hawk before I do. It’s across the country from me, I’d need to rent more storage, and it just doesn’t make any sense. My only other defense is an attempt to find something wrong with it (the California plates do NOT match the Oregon advertisement – is it real?), but I’m getting itchy. I’m not sure whether to thank the ever-diligent T.J. for finding it or not. Either way, it’s on Craigslist (for now) with a lowered asking price of $11,000.

Is there anything in here to dissuade me from making the call? The upholstery may be torn beneath that scraggly, shaggy seat cover. Probably not, the rest of the seats look fine. Maybe the steering wheel is cracked under the Pep Boys pleather steering wheel cover. Who cares? It’s a four-speed car…that just makes it worse! Nope, nothing in here but yet another classically-styled Studebaker interior. I love these things.

Maybe there’s something under the hood that doesn’t look quite right. Nope, just a 289 four barrel with 225 horsepower that’s perfect for keeping up on expressways and leaving two scratches on the pavement. Oh, does it have a Twin Traction differential, you ask? Yes it does.

OK, it needs a set of heater hoses, so that will cost me ten or twenty dollars. But the new power brake booster and exhaust system will more than make up for that. No help there.

Well, perhaps the color isn’t to my taste. Nope, it is. It’s turquoise, which is the perfect color for almost any early-to-mid-1960s automobile. Perhaps parts availability isn’t good enough. Nah, the Studebaker Drivers Club is very active, and parts aren’t generally a problem.

Maybe it’s rusty. Unfortunately not, at least according to the owner; it’s advertised as being a rust-free, three-owner Hawk with 70,000 miles on it. There have been plenty of GT Hawks for sale on Barn Finds over the last few months, and this one looks like the perfect driver. In all seriousness, aside from the disparate plate/state conundrum, the only problem mentioned in the advertisement is that a brake is hanging up, and that could be something as simple as a parking brake cable or a brake hose. The owner can no longer work on the car “due to age and mobility issues,” and “cannot afford to hire [work] done,” so the repairs will be up to the new owner. So what do you think? Are you a buyer?
