Project In Drag: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Drag Car
Parked since 1986, this 1967 Chevelle is an old drag car turned project that will need some work before it is ready to hit the street or strip again. Though it is located in Wisconsin, its use as a drag car helped preserve the body and frame. The frame is advertised as rust-free and the body seems fairly straight save for some questionable body work. With some hard work and dedication, this could either be a really unique street car or a great start for a drag car. Find it here on eBay with a starting bid of $3,000 and no reserve.
Just as a drag car should be, the interior is stripped of anything not absolutely necessary to go down the strip. The transmission is a Turbo 400, but I don’t see a shifter either on the floor or the column. It looks like maybe a ratchet shifter was mounted on the floor at one time, but there’s nothing there now. I’m not much into drag racing myself, but I love the look of old drag cars like this and I think it would be fun to put a full interior in it and cruise around!
The engine is in the car but not fully installed or complete. According to the ad, the engine is a “1966 Impala 396 (I checked the numbers and this is what they match-see picture)(motor was supposed to be re-built but I never checked it).” Having owned a 1967 Chevelle with a 396, I can vouch that these cars will get up and go just fine with this under the hood! The seller is also including brand new headers with the sale.
From this side the questionable body work I mentioned can be seen. It looks like the metal is decent underneath, but this whole side may need to be stripped to bare metal. The seller advertises the hood scoop as “ugly” and is including a fiberglass cowl induction hood with the sale. The front bumper is also fiberglass. I’m known for having unconventional taste, and I actually like the look of the “ugly” hood scoop and I think it adds to the unique look of this old drag car. Though it may still be a good candidate for a drag vehicle, this Chevelle would be a lot of fun on the street!

I love these 300/ 300 deluxe or plain old chevelles cause you never see them anymore. they were all just cars and not as desirable as the SS’s or even Malibu’s which makes them that much more desirable to me! looks like a great start for someone to turn back into a street car but the 300 bits will be hard to find. wonder how it was set up from the factory since most were 6 cylinder three on the tree cars but many had powerglides as well? hope it gets the love and attention it deserves!
have to find a hood I hate the scoop!
Agreed….the scoop sucks…..pun intended. :)
I would also keep that ugly hood scoop to keep it more period correct.
Basically a prime candidate for any type of build, no worries about another numbers matching yadiyaya auction prize here.
Dump the 10 bolt posi, swap out the 396 for a 502, full tilt turbo 400 transmission and repair as little as necessary. Then go and have some fun drag racing. The snorkel hood scoop will work just fine, better than the cowl induction anyways.😎
Money talks…..BS walks…
Take off the hood scoop throw some dog dish hubcaps and make sleeper out of it!
A older gentleman used to bring his 70 Nova drag car to our Friday night cruise at AutoZone, he would give people rides down highway 10 doing big @zz burnouts, until the law put a stop to that. This Chevelle would be a nice project since numbers matching is not a priority. I also would ditch the scoop and go with the cowl induction hood but keep the drag car theme.
I would keep the car as is. Yes the car is full of mud and what lies underneath the bodywork could cost a few dollars. The scoop is the best part!
Keep the scoop.Don’t be scared to be different.
Sold @$3100 …3-bids?
Never to be a money maker?
Would never be purist, a good old three month garage builder, if motor is good 20+k, on the street, looking and sounding sweet.
REPO parts and nody panels are out there but if titled, an after work and weekends, make one an individualized ride.
10 inch rear, can Handel a “warmed” 396 with, I would gladly PLUNK a redone aluminum powerglide, 350 0r 400 tranny.
There is still a strong number of youths and youthful out there who like cruising in a streight bodied, nice not wild paint and a set of Ralleys.
