No Reserve: 1987 Chevrolet K5 Blazer
The market for GM “squarebody” trucks is hotter now than ever, and this shiny, low-mileage, fuel-injected example is up for bids with no reserve here on eBay out of Alabama. Hurry, though, because it’s only got one more day left!
The K5 full-size Blazers (and GMC Jimmys) first went on the market in 1969 and were well-received by the buying public. There were a plethora of engine, interior, and convenience options – almost anything available on the C/K/R/V pickup lines could be had on the Blazer/Jimmy, and the last ones rolled out the door and into history for the 1991 model year.
While known just as well for their propensity to rust as they are for their iconic look, these were the ‘small’ SUV offering from GM from their inception until the advent of the S-10 Blazer in the 1980s. Additionally, for those of you unfamiliar: The United States Department of Defense contracted with GM to produce the M1009, which was a stripped-down, diesel-powered, camouflage-painted variant of the Blazer that saw mostly light-duty around the world for decades, save for a few that saw action in Operation Desert Storm.
Turning our attention to vehicle at hand, we see what looks to be a very-well-kept example which has a throttle-body-fuel-injected 5.7 liter V8, mated to automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive. Its solid white exterior presents very well and the maroon velour interior looks as though it’s rarely seen a human posterior. It’s showing a mere 19,000 miles and, by the looks of it, we can believe that it might be true! We can overlook a couple of modern upgrades like the LED headlights and newer stereo, can’t we?
Under the hood, the venerable GM V8 looks clean and complete, and the whole engine compartment looks very good for its age. The jack is in its proper place atop the inner fender, and the firewall looks very clean.
I don’t know about you, but I sure would like to have this one in my driveway. High gas prices be damned, I would personally much rather drive a simple, capable vintage machine like this instead of my current daily, which is full of wires and computers and sensors and automatic-this and driver-assisting that. I drove an M1009 early on in my 20-years’ service in the United States Military, and would gladly drive a civilian one for the rest of my life.
