No Reserve: 1984 Toyota Pickup Xtracab 4×4
Toyota’s truck models earned a place in automotive history, thanks to their unstoppably reliable and rugged nature. Unfortunately, the same positive attributes are the reason that finding a clean and well-kept example of a Toyota truck is a challenge – especially at an affordable price. Luckily, this 1984 Toyota Pickup Xtracab is available here on eBay in a no reserve auction, and it checks all the boxes for anyone seeking a sweet example of a classic Toyota truck.
This pickup is available in White Marsh, Maryland with a clean title. The seller provides CarFax information in the advertisement, which gives us a little bit of a look into the vehicle’s history. While there is no information from 1987 to 1999, it appears that the vehicle traveled very little between 1999 and 2012, and was sold to a new owner that year. The vehicle exchanged hands once again in 2015 and was sold at an auto auction in Pennsylvania during 2019, which is presumably where the seller found the vehicle.
The exterior of the vehicle is mostly clean, though there are some minor blemishes throughout that are expected of a truck like this. There are some scratches, dents, and rust in and around the bed, which also appears to be a slightly different color than the rest of the truck – though that could just be the photos. I’m also a huge fan of how the Xtracab models look.
More importantly, the undercarriage of the vehicle is extremely clean. Additionally, as you can see, this truck still uses a solid front axle for the 4-wheel-drive system, which is a very desirable feature for this era of Toyota trucks. Before the 1986 model year, the company began using an independent front suspension for 4WD models, which offers a more comfortable general driving feel but provides less off-road capability.
Though the exterior may have some imperfections, the interior more than makes up for it. The seats show their age but are are rip-free, and this example has the factory AM/FM radio and air conditioning system.
Under the hood, you’ll find Toyota’s reliable 22-RE engine, which pairs to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-wheel-drive system. The drivetrain only has 41,877 miles on it, which is barely breaking it in.

That bed looks like a second generation bed….not original. 1985 was the last year for solid axle. Unbelievable it is already at $7100 and three days to go. More going on here that meets the eye. I sold a very nice 87 SR5 last fall for $6500 and felt that it was very fair.
100 percent correct on the bed. It is from the next generation.

And if you read the negatives… supposedly low miles vehicles with severe rust problem underneath…
No surprise that the entire bed of this has been replaced. My sister bought an 86 brand new, same color as this one, in January of 1986. By April of 1987, every spot weld and every Adjoining panel on the bed and 1/4’s were rusting through after only two Ohio winters. My other sister bought a brand new Camry in 1986 and four years later you could reach into the trunk without opening the lid there was so much rust on the 1/4s. It also went to the scrap heap with 69,000 far from trouble free miles on it. Constant head gasket issues that ended up with a warped cylinder head. Both of my sister’s experiences with Toyota’s were enough to keep me from ever buying one.
Somebody needs to confiscate the sellers collection of rattle cans. What a bunch of shoddy dolling up has been done. Could you at least keep the white paint off the tires? Black over spray here and there from the bumpers being sprayed in place. Turn signals are missing, the already mentioned mismatched bed. I’ve wanted one of these for a long time but I’d walk away from this one simply because of the hack job the seller has done on the poor thing. Clean up and prep them correctly or just show them honestly. Sheesh!
Best thing about this truck is the Engine… it is indestructable…. however.. Dash is split and shot… Seats are filthy… the bed of course has been changed.. other parts are missing.. Seller is totally misrepresenting this truck IMO… I will pass.. its not worth it to me..
The bottom of this has been sprayed, the tailpipe is some oddity, they didn’t come out way back like that, along with everyone elses comments above. I bought a new ’84, but with a long bed, not xtended cab. Although I drove it for 24 years and 172,000 miles, the frame disintegrated, and the bed rusted badly, all inspite of my efforts to prevent it. It was a great truck, if it only hadn’t had those problems. Then I bought a used ’94 and the lower A frame on the left side broke apart from rusting so bad. I replaced it, and got rid of it. Vowing never to buy another Toyota. I have Dodge’s now.

I had a 2wd, SR5 Xtra Cab. Yes the Xtra Cab is awesome for anyone 6 foot or taller. Plenty of leg room for such a small truck. Yes, the beds do rust faster than the cabs. This seems like a nice truck, but not $7k nice. I hope that whoever buys it… sees it in person, and takes a good look all over it. By the way mine was a fuel injected 1986, which I would take any day over the carbureted versions.
