No Reserve: 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV
This 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV is offered up with no reserve and the auction ending Monday. It’s a decent-looking example and one that will even run on occasion if you click your heels three times and hit it on the hood nicely. Seriously though, the seller notes that it runs when it wants to, which is to say “not consistently.” Rust is contained at the moment, so it seems like a very worthy project if you’ve been looking for a GTV worth restoring. Most GTVs still up for grabs as projects are usually fairly rotten, to say nothing of their running condition. Find this GTV here on eBay where bidding is nearing $23,000.
The old-school California blue plates are always a good sign of a car’s longevity in California, and the seller indicates it’s a lifelong resident. The bodywork does look largely good, although there are some signs of bodywork on the rear quarter and over the rear passenger wheel well. Chrome bumpers look to be in excellent shape, and the same goes for the original steel wheels. Tinted windows may be tawdry by most standards but they appear to have played a role in keeping the interior in very good condition; more on that shortly. The color is a nice change of pace from the usual reds and blacks we see Alfas of this vintage in. It reminds me of the Sahara paint job that BMW 2002s came in.
That is a very decent interior for a project car. The window tint certainly helps, but I have to believe the Alfa was garaged for a spell as well. The car also just looks loved – the carpets are clean, the door panels intact, and the bucket seat upholstery is untorn. You have the classic bus-like Alfa steering wheel, and it’s always encouraging to not see a brake or clutch pedal glued to the floor. The dash is cracked and that’s to be expected, but the console looks to be damage-free. The seller claims the floors and trunk are rust-free, and that the only areas are concern are the jack points where some rust is beginning to form.
The GTV comes with its original Spica fuel injection, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. The seller says it “runs when it wants” and he suspects the injection pump needs rebuilding. His advice? Convert it to carbs, which isn’t a bad suggestion. At least you’re not starting with a car that’s been halfway converted or otherwise messed with and left with parts strewn about. The plug wires look relatively new, so I wonder if someone was messing with ignition components to see if it solved the rough running issues. Whatever the story may be, this looks like a clean project Alfa, and rare to find at no reserve.

Got a little time with one of these. One of the best driving cars ever built. Only problem was the “from the factory” rust and the shaky electronics referenced above. The silver with black interior ’72 we almost bought new off the showroom floor was a beautiful car but the rust around the door handles from over tightening on the new paint ruined that buy.
This GTV reminds me of a maroon one I saw running around in Santa Barbara. Car was a daily driver with faded paint. Probably a 73 or 74 like this one. I approached him one day to compliment him on his choice to drive and enjoy it and how special they were. Such a beautiful design and equally fun to drive. You could convert to Weber side drafts but the Spica is better and more desirable IMHO. There are still a couple shops who can go through the pump and refresh it. Repair the jack points and the Spica and continue to drive it often. None of my Alfas ever left me stranded because I drove them daily.
Could be a lot worse, though the driver´s side wing is probably hiding more rot than it wouold appear! Interesting colour as well. You may still be wiser to pay $50K for a nice driver.
BTW, it´s all stainless steel trim, not chrome.
Pricing for these seems to be all over the place. Still have my father’s 66k mile Dutch Blue ’74 that I need to get around to restoring. Thankfully we resisted the temptation to get rid of the original SPICA f.i. in favor of Webers, but I’ll second the comment about the questionable electronics; my father mentioned that the windshield wipers conveniently quit on him the night he brought it home from the dealership.

when i graduated high school this would’ve been 6 years old, relatively new.
But i can’t recall seeing even one in my town…i would’ve loved to have found one ………..
