No Reserve LT1: 1970 Chevrolet Corvette
A red Corvette is one of those cars that instantly brings a smile to my face, every time I spot one. It’s just one of those immediately recognizable American works of art that artists write songs about and people seem to flock towards. The C3 is also one of those models that numerous owners tended to add their own custom touches to on the outside, and this 1970 Chevrolet Corvette for sale here on eBay has its fair share, plus with bidding sitting at $15,000 with not much time left this one has the potential to not break the bank, as there’s no reserve. Unless you live near Ellington, Connecticut, there are probably not enough hours left to go see this ‘Vette in person before the gavel drops, but the seller seems to have provided some good honest information here so I’m guessing there aren’t going to be too many surprises facing the next owner.
First things first, if you’re looking for a factory big block example, this isn’t your car. And if you’re a small-block kind of guy seeking the original LT1 this one came with still under the hood, no dice here either, as that’s long gone. But the seller says there’s a good running 350 in it now, which he thinks is mostly stock, although we get little information as to its origin. In fact, we don’t even get to see the motor in a photo from the listing, but some good news is that 4 separate YouTube videos are provided, including this one, all low-resolution quality but at least we get to view under the hood. There’s also both an out and back video of the Corvette running and being driven, and the 350 appears to be doing fine.
From a distance, the body looks pretty good, and even up close it doesn’t seem all that bad overall. One blemish I spotted in a video is a body crack on the passenger side on top near the back window, but it’s certainly not catastrophic, and if a driver is all the next owner is wanting maybe this one’s OK on the outside like it is for a while, if you can live with that hood. Some buyers will also probably want to axe those aftermarket wheels, but regardless of whether or not those stay or go, the seller mentions that the tires are going to need replacing, and the future of those side pipes will be a matter of choice for the new owner.
The interior condition is stated as decent for the most part, with no cracks in the dash and nice-looking door panels, but new seat coverings and a replacement console will be in order to make things a lot better inside. Another issue is the wiring, as the engine is starting with a push-button and stopping with a kill switch, so if you’ve got some electrical skills those will definitely come in handy. The owner says this was a Texas car in the past, with the underside stated as solid, and a good birdcage too. If the price doesn’t get too much higher, this one seems like a fairly good project for the money, but as we all know sometimes the bidding goes out of control in the last few minutes. That is a nice ride. Don’t change anything, fix anything minor, and hit the road.
Not a real LT1. No LT1 came with an automatic trans. The valve covers are the wrong type. The LT1s did not have the center bolt heads. Most of all, the engine suffix code, CTG, shown on the warranty book, denotes a 300 HP 350 CID engine. That cut up L88 hood doesn’t belong there, either

The original LT1 was in 1969. And it never had a 350 CID. And they only made two. You might never see one for sale.

The LT1 was built over a few years – a 350 with solid lifters that represented the most powerful small block you could get in the years it was offered 1970 – 72.
You are exactly correct. My mistake. Chevrolet has always had a great small block program. The 302 in the Z-28 was probably the best.
I think this was a great buy for a solid, decent looking chrome bumper Vette.
Maybe you have luck and get the current engine running, or maybe you pull it and throw something better in. Either way, someone got a great deal.
