No Reserve 402: 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
This 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is a tidy classic where the owner has spent considerable money recently. He has treated the body to a complete restoration, while the engine and transmission have both received a rebuilt. It makes a stunning visual impact and is a classic that the new owner could drive with their head held high. This Chevelle has the “wow” factor in abundance. It presents beautifully in its Midnight Bronze paint, with White stripes. The owner performed a cosmetic restoration of this classic around four years ago, and it still shows superbly. The paint holds a beautiful depth of shine, and there are no apparent flaws or defects. He emphasizes that the stripes are not decals but are painted. The panels look as straight as an arrow, with no dents or bruises. There’s no visual evidence of rust, and the owner doesn’t mention any problems in his listing. He says that the floors and trunk pan are solid, which is positive news for potential buyers. The external trim is in excellent order, as are the wheels. The glass looks flawless, and there is little doubt that this classic would turn heads wherever it goes.
The news appears to be nothing but positive for purists when we lift the hood. The engine bay is occupied by the car’s numbers-matching 402ci LS3 V8 that should produce 240HP. Bolted to this big block is a TH400 automatic transmission, while the vehicle also features power steering and power brakes. This combination should allow the Chevelle to storm the ¼ mile in 15.8 seconds before finding its way to 131mph. The owner states that he treated both the engine and transmission to a rebuild around two years ago. The engine bay presents nicely for a vehicle of this age, and it appears that looks are not receptive. The owner says that the SS runs and drives well, and it seems that there are no vices or issues. I’m fascinated by the damage to the fan shroud, which suggests there may have been a problem in the past. Perfectionists will probably search for a replacement shroud to give the engine bay a completed look.
The owner claims that this Chevelle was a special order, with the seats upholstered in Camel Tan. Its overall presentation is pretty impressive, with only a single split on the driver’s seat worth noting. However, I believe that a competent upholsterer may be able to repair this without the need to replace the cover. The remaining upholstered surfaces are in good order, as are the carpet and headliner. The dash and pad are in excellent condition, as is the console. The original radio has made way for an aftermarket unit while a CD player is mounted under the dash. Aftermarket speakers have been fitted in the kick panels, and it looks like there may be some in the rear parcel tray. Otherwise, this interior is unmolested. It features ice-cold air conditioning and the sports gauge pack with a factory tach.
Sometimes it can be easy to determine the desirability of a classic car. In this case, we only need to look at the bidding history. People seem to like what they see, which explains why there have already been fifty-three bids submitted at the time of writing. The fan shroud has a big hole in it…
The fan shroud with the hole.. motor mounts broken. Foot to the floor engine jump up. He should of replaced that part. And the engine could of clean up better. 🐻🇺🇸
Something about those VALVE COVERS DON’T look right, Most of the BIG Blocks were chrome or painted if my memory hasn’t failed me. These look like they have a bed liner finish to them they also looked to grooved JMHO.
This engine has had significant modifications. The valve covers are late-90’s or newer aluminum valve covers used on 3/4 and 1 ton Chevy trucks, it has an aftermarket intake, dual feed Holley and later model HEI. The damaged fan shroud isn’t a big deal, they become brittle over time and are easily damaged, reproductions are readily available for just over $100.

This is a great looking color combination on a car that I would love to own. But I have never understood why they had wire hood locks. Was this thought to be cosmetically desirable at that time? If not and hoods flying open at high speeds was a danger, it seems like the solution would have been to design a better latch system.
The dash is incorrect for this car, should have the light on the far right side for the seatbelt. Engine looks like it came out of a 90’s Chevy pickup and the hood is a dome hood, not cowl induction. Someone put the cowl induction emblems on it.
So the car started life in Pennsylvania, It now has Minnesota plates on it and it’s sitting in Florida. This car been around and I can understand why it needed a resto. It was in the worst places for the winters. I for one would check it over real good before dropping the coin, Just to many things don’t add up. Love the color BUT the BABY$H-T Brown Interior would have to go.
The dash bezel is an aftermarket piece, and as mentioned does not have the seat belt light. Virtually all of the aftermarket dashes have chrome trim around the 4 smaller bezels surrounding the speedometer. On the factory dash these were black. The parking brake was also sacrificed for speaker pods. Overall a decent Chevelle, and a big block, somewhat uncommon as most seem to be small blocks.
