Listed at no reserve and with bids comfortably below $2,000, this 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider could be going quite cheaply to its next owner. It’s a non-runner at the moment, but the car looks just complete enough to convince yourself that it will come back to life with ease, and it was running when parked 10 years ago. This era of the Spider certainly wasn’t the most desirable, but it’s hard to beat the experience of a top-down Italian sports car regardless of the generation. Though the basic design of the Spider didn’t change drastically over the years, the aging process was still not kind to the Alfa. The big U.S. safety bumpers and the loss of the enclosed headlamp design were two major design changes that always stood out to me, but fortunately, both of those issues can be remedied with OEM or aftermarket parts. Reproduction European-spec bumpers are available and completely change the look of the car.

The interior similarly didn’t see many changes over the years, with the center stack gauge cluster and a high-mounted manual shifter both hallmarks of the Spider’s design regardless of which era you choose. The large, three-spoke steering wheel is a similar carry-over from year to year and is still a great look today. The interior of this Alfa is surviving well despite years off the road, with seats and door panels in good shape, and a dash that appears to be shockingly crack-free.

The twin-cam, fuel-injected four cylinder should provide lively performance once it’s been confirmed to turn freely. The good news is plenty of these still show up in junkyards so finding a replacement engine won’t be impossible if this one can’t be revived. The Spider doesn’t look like a car that’s been off the road for a decade, as the engine bay looks as clean as the cabin. While you can spend a respectable sum on a Spider, there’s no shame in going for one of the cheaper gens.
