Not an SS! 1972 Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1972 Chevelle might look like an SS at first glance because of its wheels, but it’s a regular Malibu Sport Coupe with a tweaked 350 cubic inch V8 and original Mulsanne Blue paint. The Chevy is said to be a one-owner car, yet the dust suggests it hasn’t been moving around much of late. Located in Chicago, Illinois, this low-mileage Chevy is available here on craigslist for a stout $28,000. Kudos to Barn Finder Rocco B. for the tip!

At more than 212,000 copies in 1972, the Malibu Sport Coupe continued to be the second generation’s most popular model and body style. And nearly 98% of them had some form of a V8 engine (including the Super Sport, which was an option on the Malibu). This blue beauty has a 350 V8 which we assume is original, but it’s had some tweaks (sorry, no under-the-hood photos were posted). These include a camshaft from a 327 that produced 350 hp, heads from a 1969 Z/28 Camaro, a high-performance clutch, a Hurst shifter, and more.

We’re told the black interior with a bench seat is in excellent condition, but also no photos. The car has always been kept indoors when not driven, but when was the last time that it was on the road? If they’re trying to portray a barn find, not washing it is a good idea. But as a car with original paint that seems to otherwise be nice, why not bath it?

The odometer reads 40,800 miles, which works out to only 800 a year. Perhaps the SS  or Z/28 style wheels were ordered when new, or they were added later, making for one of the best-looking Chevelles from that era. The car will come with a new set of headers in the box, but the buyer will have to replace the exhaust and install a new battery. The seller has managed to find the Protect-O-Plate but is still on the hunt for the window sticker.

70’s had 4 headlights, I only see two in the pics. 71’s had one headlight with the marker light split in two pieces, 72 had one head light with a one piece marker light (like the car in the ad). What am I missing?

I wish it was cleaned and more photos were supplied. This could be an extremely sweet car. I don’t know if I’d use time on it at this point though. Clean it up and provide more pic’s to make it inviting.

But the barn find dust adds to the value.

I see red flags on this Malibu! First.. no photos of the interior..why? No photo of the engine why? The front of car looks a tad light! Missing motor? And you want how much?!!! Sir if your serious about selling it do a better job and prove it. This wouldn’t fly in Missouri!!! We want to see it all. It’s a good looking ride. Thanks .🐻🇺🇸

Serious buyers should be very wary. In Chicago, that car should be rotted beyond recognition unless carefully stored every winter. As mentioned above, no interior or engine pictures, and in a car that old, it’s hard to believe it’s got an original 40k miles. Also, they could’ve washed it before taking pictures. They’re either terribly unmotivated, or the story is a lot of crap. Buyer beware.

I’m with you, one thing the owner said that I think is wrong, it comes with new clutch ass. I’ve owned several of the 71-72 models. Never have I seen a malibo with a bench seat and a standard shift tranny, only way I’ve seen that is in a ss model and they have bucket seats. So that tells me it’s not original.

This is to Wendell. Tbone said he likes the 72 taillights and the 70 headlights and maybe he should buy a 72 and put a 70 front clip on it and Richard Todte said he OWNED a 72 with 70 headlights. No one said this was either one.
