Nitrous Powered: 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 454

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

US automakers went all out in 1970 to offer big engines and lots of power. Even cars that would be considered cruisers or personal luxury cars could be optioned with powerful engines. This 1970 Monte Carlo SS 454 is a prime example. The car is located in Addison, Illinois and is listed for sale here on eBay. The Buy It Now Price is $29,900 and there are two days remaining in the listing. The seller also has a Make Offer option if you want to make an offer for less than the listing price.

The seller states that the car is an authentic SS 454 but does not state that it is the original original. The Chevrolet big block 454 cubic inch V8 has been rebuilt and modified including a 0.60 overbore, 830 cfm Holley carburetor and headers. A fuel tank is located in the trunk and, if 454+ cubic inches of power is not enough, the car appears to have a 2 stage NO2 system added. The original engine was rated at 360 horsepower and only 3,823 SS 454’s were built out of 145,976 Monte Carlos built in 1970

The car has a “Brute Strength” 12 bolt rear end with 4.10 gear ratio. There are not any pictures of the interior but there is a walk around video. The Monte Carlo has power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, tilt steering and automatic transmission. The GM Turbo 400 automatic transmission has a 3500 stall converter so lighting up the tires should be a piece of cake. It appears as if an aftermarket cowl induction hood has been installed and the seller states that the original hood comes with the car.

This car is finished in the factory correct Gobi Beige and has aftermarket wheels and tires. The full vinyl top is fitted in a matching color. The seller discloses that the original sheet metal is straight and the paint only has a few flaws. The chrome and glass look good.  The car has lots of documentation and comes with several of the original parts. More good news is that the seller reports no rush and the car has not had any sheet metal replaced or patched.

I love the fact that the builder made very subtle visual changes, in keeping with the sleeper vibe the Monte Carlo SS454 had from the factory. I’d be tempted to reinstall the original hood and replace the wheels with factory steelies and basic wheel covers (standard on the SS454, and a wheel/wheel cover upgrade is not listed among the optional equipment on this car) and let observers wonder if the ladder bars are just for show.

I would, however, be much more comfortable throwing the nitrous switch if the seller indicated that the engine and transmission internals were upgraded to handle the extra toque.

Sorry… traction bars, not ladder bars. My head had it right; my fingers didn’t get the memo.

Question for the experts on this car,
Why put a fuel cell in the trunk? Wouldn’t the gas tank hold at least twenty gallons of gas? More fuel capacity is great, but is it really needed?
Nice car, I always liked the early Monte bodies.

I suspect if that 454 with a 4.10 rear end goes on a very long cruise, the extra fuel tank will come in handy.

My Monte Carlo was a 72. I still prefer that grill. If I had an extra thirty grand or so , I would bring this Monte to Florida .

I’d scrap the nitrous and the fuel cell, go back to the original hood and shifter, put in a high speed rear end, and cruise the country.

Beautiful looking Monte. I’ve always loved this and the later Colonnade body Monte Carlo.

Would offer 25k. Leave the wheels and nitrous with current owner. Install original hood. Put 323’s in the rear and go.
