Nice Price: 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix Model J
I’ve always preferred to write about cars where the seller provides us with a decent number of quality pictures. Unfortunately, this car has only two pictures posted, but I believe this car at the asking price may stir some interest. This is a 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix Model J for sale here on Craigslist in Mechanicsville, Virginia. The car appears to be at the mechanics in the picture.
This Grand Prix is not perfect. It does appear there are some paint issues, but I don’t think there is any rust. Also, the vinyl roof appears to possibly have a problem in the area where the top folds down onto the C pillars n both sides. This Grand Prix has power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, tilt wheel, AM/FM radio, power seat, and power windows. The car also has the Pontiac Rally II wheels.
The Pontiac has its original 400 cubic inch V-8 mated with a Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission. The seller does not state if it runs. It comes with the original invoice and Protecto-Plate. The mileage is not stated. The seller is asking $4500. That seems like a great price if the car is in good mechanical condition. A few cosmetic items and this car could be worth much more. Hagerty values the average 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix at $14,100. This is a car worth looking into if you would like to do the work or have the work done to make this a great car again.

I don’t think the photos were taken at the mechanics. That looks more like a hobbiest’s garage with all of the memorabilia on the walls. Seems like a good price even if the car requires a bit of work to get running.
Well, the seller doesn’t say much about the car and the two pictures are almost useless. It would be nice to know if runs.
And no interior shots? Should be mandatory unless something’s really of sorts. :o
This vintage of Grand Prix is starting to grow on me. However, the ’77 will always be my favorite. For the price I would be willing to take a closer look but it’s clear across the country so I’ll have to let someone else have the chance to enjoy it…
These were quick, and handled pretty well as I remember. Are they based on the Lemans/GTO frame, like Monte Carlo’s that are based on Malibu frames? Seems like a good price.
While all of us would like more info, remember Craigslist ads are only targeted to locals, and the seller expects interested buyers to be able to come by easily. I’m sure a phone call could probably net more pictures and info. Bet the seller would be surprised to know his/her car is being discussed globally.
They are actually a special version of the A-body with a slightly longer frame in the front area between the firewall and the front suspension, they were called a G-body, which later became the catch all term for the RWD A-bodies after 1982.
“A” body’s such as LeMans, Chevelle’s, etc. They called these “G” body’s.. Pretty much a lengthened “A” body..
My father had a beautiful ’69 GP. A year older than this but not much difference from the little I know. It had a factory hood tach which was a pretty rare thing to see.
I’d like to know if it’s an early model or late model. The 1970 early model GP looks like the 69 model and didn’t change cosmetically until sometime in May of 1970. I have the XH code 345hp 400 on a stand in my garage.
Nice Pontiac, Chevys answer was the Monte Carlo but it took them 8 years, I often wonder why Olds & Buick didn’t come up with a car. Yep the Toronado & the Riviera might be considered as such but I remember them as more “upscale”.
I had a 71 Olds Cutlass S which was the Olds answer to a Monte or G.P.
I bought a 1970 G.P. back in 2003 a virtual twin to this in the same condition. Ran great and I drove it here and there close to home. $1200 Oh, those were good days.. LOL

Factory rated consertavily at 300 HP. Were all ‘70 GPs equipped with bucket seats and a console, or was that an option?
Differences in the ’69 vs. ’70 Grand Prix were very subtle – the grill bars ran horizontally on the ’69 and vertical on the ’70 – the hash marks on the lower roof sail panel and the word Grand Prix on the front fender (’69) swapped places on the ’70.
This car is for sale in MECHANICSVILLE (Virginia)…this should be quite reassuring about the running conditions of this car. Everything works fine on every car in Mechanicsville !
Love the 69/70 Grand Prixs! My first car at age 19 in 1977 was a 1969 SJ-light green with a black vinyl top and wheel covers. It had a 428-370 hp with auto, posi, pw/driver’s seat and a green cloth/vinyl interior. Bought it in Portland, OR where I was in college and drove it back to Cleveland, OH. It could burn as much rubber as you wanted and for a large car handled pretty well. Had it less than a year and sold it for the same $1100 I paid for it. Still miss it! The featured car looks like it could be a good deal and I would probably check it out if I were closer.
