NAPCO Conversion: 1958 GMC Suburban
Up for sale is a 1958 GMC Suburban that has had a 4×4 conversion done by NAPCO. It currently resides in Rockdale, Texas and has reached $4,050 at the time of writing from 13 bidders. There is a reserve and it has not yet been met. The seller has noted a VIN in the listing, along with 6,107 miles, and a clean title. You can view more on eBay.
As mentioned above, this truck was at one time a two wheel drive and was converted into four. Getting everything rolling is a six cylinder engine connected to a four-speed manual transmission. Recently, the seller has replaced the plugs, wires, points, and had the oil changed. They have also installed a new fuel pump and battery. The carburetor has been cleaned. They have the NAPCO metal tag on the transfer case.
Inside, you are met with a primitive but effective green interior. There’s only a two-seat bench and single-seat passenger seat. The rest is completely open. This would be a great vehicle to haul stuff around in. If you are looking for a promotional vehicle or something to transport goods around to trade shows, this might be an epic rolling billboard. There is some rust in areas, but most of it is surface.
If it isn’t, the seller has noted in detail where those areas are. Those could probably be fixed up quite easily. They do provide a number of underside photos as well. This listing has great information and good photos to get a good idea of the care this truck has had by the current owner. Now, the question will be how much is the reserve and will it be worthwhile? I guess the only thing to do is place a bid and find out!

This is a factory line-built NAPCO as denoted by the heavier 5,600 GVW, 2wd trucks were 5,000 lb GVW.
This truck could be parked at my place. I would clean it all up, probably replace the window seals, treat it to a driver-quality respray and just have some fun with it. Use it as a truck should be used. Lots of room in the back; you cold even haul an engine home with that. That 270 enigne would continue to soldier on just the way it is. Not fast but I’m retired so why would I want to go fast? 50-55 is just fine with me…
I’m up in the air about the paint, could go either way for me. Everything else you said I 100% agree on. Driver quality paint is definitely a viable option though.
Hi David. Paint is always a contested topic. Trouble is; so many think you have to take it to a body shop. Well, a body shop is equipped to do that but I’ve seen some quality jobs done in a garage, by people with little experience. A trip to the local hardware store will get you something in a single stage enamel or equivalent for a fraction of what it would cost at an auto paint supplier. You can get good spray guns at Harbor Freight (or equivalent) without having to mortgage the house.
My uncle had a 1958 Chevy Apache pickup with this same drive train in it , one tough truck , used for his roofing business and snow plow duty in the winter ( upstate NY )
What a beast I’ve wanted one of theses in 4×4 since the first one I ever saw!!! I would make this in to my family camp truck with the motorcycle/quad trailer on back and the people tents and sleeping bags inside!! What a blast it would be!!! Great truck!!!
Know the owner of a 4×4 shop with a nut&about resto NAPCO. Interestingly, if the green paint is original along with the Cali tags may mean a government service truck. If memory serves, they were purchased for U.S. Geological survey and were used on the fault lines. Friends was relatively low mileage, rust free and very intact. Love to know the history of this one.
