Name that Car: Mystery Rally Entry
Can anyone name this car? This photo was apparently taken from Google Street View and has been floating around the internet. Looks like it was in a rally when the photo was taken, but we can’t figure out what it is. Could it be a one off? Some obscure Italian make? Any ideas?
Update 6/23/11 – Reader Mario exposed our mystery car within one day. Continue to see what it is!
Turns out it is a Ferrari! A 1952 Ferrari 225 S Vignale Spyder to be exact. Mario confirmed what it was and we did a little more research and found this photo which is of the same exact car as featured in our mystery shot. Notice the number plate. This car ran in 2009 Mille Miglia and it has a rich race history. The body was a one off that has styling cues from the 30’s. It was raced at many venues including the GP of Monaco and Targa Florio. Here is a page that lists its history in more detail. Who would have thought that this Street View photo was of such a special and unique automobile!

Believe it or not, I think this is a kit car on a coupe chassis… notice the whole body is one piece, and no doors with such a huge piece of glass for a window… just sayings, it cant be a real classic.
Good point, it could be a kit car. I would think it has to be something special to be running in a rally. It could still be older though because companies have been building fiberglass bodies since at least the 50's. The plexiglass windscreen doesn't rule that possibility out either because they were used in racing or it could have even been added later. Any other ideas what this could be?
It's a Ferrari 225 Export Vignale. One of the ugliest cars (Vignale or Ferrari) they ever made, but very rare and probably worth quite a lot of money .http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2462/3570794767_d8fd6c8d6a.jpgHere's a pic of the same car in those pictures: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2244/3539165778_ed…
Wow, that was fast Mario! We have updated the post with a few more photos and photos of this interesting car.
From the lines of the car in the top photo I originally thought it was a jaguar ss100 but then I saw the other photo and noticed what appeared to be a Ferrari emblem on the hood
