Odd Color Combo: 1970 Chevrolet Camaro SS
Chevrolet introduced the new second generation Camaro on February 25, 1970. Typically, a new model is introduced in the summer of the prior year and production starts in August. For the Camaro, production continued until November of 1969 for the first generation Camaro. In the first quarter for 1970, dealers were selling new 1969 and 1970 model Camaros. So, the 1970 Camaro is often referred to at the 1970 1/2 Camaro because production started much later than normal. This example is located in Townsend, Delaware and is listed here on eBay. With 4 days remaining in the auction, the car is bid to $10,800.
The trim tag on the cowl of the car indicates that the Camaro left the factory painted in Code 58 Autumn Gold. The car was built in the second week of June 1970 (06B) and the interior trim code of 723 shows that it was ordered with a standard dark green interior. The Camaro was assembled at the Norwood, Ohio plant and not the Van Nuys plant located in Los Angeles. The seller states that the car is a true Camaro SS that was purchased on June 20, 1970 at Thorp Chevrolet in Annapolis, Maryland. Some of the options added to the car included soft ray tinted windows, posi rear axle, SS option, special purpose suspension and power steering.
The 1970 Camaro was the only year that had the low back seats with headrests. Full bucket seats were introduced in 1971. A green interior in a gold car seems to be an odd color combination but to the buyer, Edward Grant, who owned the car up until recently, it was beautiful. The paperwork shows that Mr. Grant traded in a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle to buy this Camaro. The car is a project and needs carpet and rust repair. The odometer shows just over 10,000 miles
The seller believes that car may be very low mileage and it retains its dog dish hubcaps. Not much is said about the engine except that it has a 350 cubic inch V8 powerplant backed by an automatic transmission that is column shifted. The engine is said to turn over freely but the car has been off the road for many years. Maybe the new buyer will restore it and enjoy many carefree miles back on the open road.

I thought all 1970 SS Camaros had LT1 engines..
I think that was the Z/28 that had the LT1. Oh, you could also get the automatic behind the LT1. Before that all Z cars had the 4 speed
Nope just z28 The Rpo code for Super Sport is z27 1970 engines for the super sport were L48 300hp 350, L34 350hp 396, and L78 375hp 396

LT-1 in Z28 only in 1970. Rated 360 hp due to more restrictive air cleaner and exhaust. Corvette was rated 370 hp. Best small block ever. Yes, mom had a nasty avocado kitchen in 1970. Remember it well. Today, it’s boring stainless steel. In 2075, people will back 2023 styles and laugh.

That was not that unusual of a car exterior/interior color combo.my buddy had one and backed it up to the high school front doors that we attended ,and did a burnout right there. It was a 4 speed,350 engine car. He got suspended from school shortly after that,ah the good old days

I bought what was SUPPOSED to be a 1970 1/2.
It was more yellow than gold. It had a black spoiler under the front bumper and color matched spoiler on the back. Always had problems fixing, idler arm needed to be for 1971.
I love these Camaros they have a body with a smooth style. I bought one back in 1990 or 91. It was a cream color, 4 or 5vsoeed on the floor, bucket seats in front and I think a bench style in the back. I was newly divorced raising two daughters at the time. I loved that car that times go hard on me no child support and I had to sell it to pay rent. I’ve been looking one forever I can’t find one with that style and I remember the 4th Street or five speed on the floor. Can anybody help me out or you know something about a Camero like I’m talking about let me know. Thank you!
It is kinda of an ugly color. But probably look real good restored back to glossy original color.

There is a red one this body style with a flaking black vinyl top sitting in a yard in the small town of Clarkston Washington I don’t think it has all the rust this one has from what i can see from the road I bet if you knocked on the door with cash in hand you could get it cheaper and have your project car
I had a blue ’70 in 1979 with a 307 and 3-speed on the floor. Not an SS. I think I put 5 different engines in it while I had it. I think it ended with a 327, turbo 400 with a Vega torque converter. The 283 was a dog and the 400 lasted about 500 feet, because we didn’t know about the external balance flywheel at that time. Kids with beer. I am in my 60’s now and not sure I could get in one. I have a hard time getting in my old ’74 Vette I sold my brother for that same reason. Seen one at a car show, but couldn’t find the owner to see if he would let me try. There is a rust free ’74 tub in MN for 1000 that I could make into a ’70, but not sure I want to takle that. I think I will stick to my 47-53 GM trucks. LOL. I do like this car..
Older cars odometer only went to 100,000. Than started all over. I laugh when I see people try to put that plant that low mileage seed. The Rust says it all.

I doubt this is an original SS as there is no “Z27” on the trim tag. I purchased a SS/RS new in 1971 and my tag shows the Z27. Even though the tag is really a Fisher Body tag, there are trim and badge items that the assembly plant includes that are shown on the tab (like paint color, interior color). You are right, a Norwood built SS would have Z27 on the trim tag, as would a Z28. Van Nuys cars didn’t, which is unfortunate sine those were more likely to survive because those typically supplied west coast dealers.

In 1984, I was In the Navy based out of Norfolk, & bought a 70 Camaro for $1,000. It was light green with a dark green interior. Had a 307 & 3 speed. Wasn’t a hot rod, but ran good & got decent enough mileage. Must have been the salt air off the coast, the rear quarters were already shot, but the rest was pretty solid. I traded it away a few years later for a 68 SS Camaro 4 speed with a blown up 396, that I’ve somehow managed to keep all these years.
Only 10K in 52 years. HH HA
