Lowest Mileage Example? ASC McLaren Grand Prix

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The ASC McLaren Pontiac Grand Prix Turbo has quite a long name, but it’s also a legitimately impressive performance car (by 80s standards) that is near impossible to find today in condition like this one. It helps that this car has under 6,000 original miles from new, and the seller believes it to be one of the best ones left. Find it here on eBay, where it’s for sale in Canada after being moved there following a lifetime in sunny, dry Arizona.

The ASC McLarens were indeed tuned by the legendary performance car builder, and as such, it actually has real performance improvements: a turbocharger improved performance so that the Grand Prix could reach 60 in seven seconds; performance suspension upgrades meant handling was also improved; and the cockpit got an air of exclusivity, thanks to custom leather bucket seats front and rear. The fender flares, body kit, and gold mesh wheels rounded out the improvements.

The bucket seats were something else, sort of a Recaro-on-acid design. This one, given its time-warp mileage, sports a near-perfect interior with what looks like an unused backseat. There’s even still plastic wrap on the steering wheel. The seller points out the exclusivity factor goes beyond just the impressively low mileage, as this is one a few ASC McLarens with no sunroof and one of just 750 produced in 1989 before production volume ramped up the following year.

Despite all of this, these ASC McLaren Grand Prixs remain somewhat unloved as performance cars – likely because they still weren’t a corner carver or otherwise all that compelling if you would otherwise shop Mustang GTs or Miatas. If the handling had been significantly improved and a stick shift easier to come by, history might have looked differently at these intriguing aftermarket creations instead of just being remembered for all of the buttons in the steering wheel.

A stick-shift Grand Prix Turbo is impossible to come by. These were only equipped with an automatic transmission. The 88-90 non-turbo V6 and the ’91-’93 24-valve V6 were available with a manual transmission.

I wonder if that steering wheel caused more accidents than it prevented..

$12k…not a bad deal at all. Should be gone fairly quickly.

Growing up I lusted after these! Wish they had a stick but seriously if someone gave me one I’d drive the doors off!
