Low Miles and Tasteful Mods: 1986 Ford Mustang LX Coupe
Today at Barn Finds, we’re bringing you a pair of very clean Fox Body Mustangs. While the 1990 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback that we just featured is a bone-stock example, this 1986 Ford Mustang LX Coupe that’s available here on eBay is also a clean, low-mile specimen, but it has a handful of tasteful modifications.
This coupe is available in Tempe, Arizona with a clean title. The seller mentions that an old lady used to own the car and that the sale includes owners manuals, dealer manuals, the vehicle’s window sticker, a production report, and more. Additionally, the seller notes that this was one of 23 Mustangs made with these features in the 1986 model year.
The exterior is extremely clean and still sports the original paint. From the pictures, it looks nearly flawless. This particular Mustang benefits from handling upgrades such as newer Eibach shocks and struts, Eibach lowering springs, and sway bar end links.
Inside, you’ll find a canyon red theme, which nicely complements the black exterior color. The interior appears to be completely original and everything functions properly.
There are 37,000 original miles on this Mustang’s drivetrain, which consists of a 5.0-liter V8 engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine benefits from a cam, an aftermarket air intake, an MSD ignition system, and equal-length headers, but the seller provides the original cam and air intake with the vehicle’s sale.
At the time of publication, bidding is at $8,100 without the reserve met. Would you treat this lightly modified Fox Body as a driver, or should it be a collection piece?

Very nice.
At Mustang Club of America shows the “aero nose” 1987-1993 Fox Bodies are more prevalent, though we do see some “four eyes.” Most of the “four eyes” are 1985-86 GT fastbacks, plus the 1979 Pace Car. Rarely seen are four-eye notchbacks, like this clean example.
I prefer stock, though these mods appear to be well-done and tasteful. Just like the other featured Fox, the new owner could use it as a driver or as a show car.
Thanks Kevin.
A very good looking Notch.
I like it. Would be a lot more fun washing and waxing this stang over installing body panels on an old one.
Ad says car was driven by a little old lady from Tempe, AZ(I thought she was from Pasedena?) with a stick shift. In all my life, I have only met 1 old lady that drives a stick shift.
33 years ago, in 1986, she probably wasn’t an old lady.
My thought exactly.
My late wife began driving in my 61 Sprite. We went through numerous other 3, 4, 5, and 6 speeds. We owned 19 cars over 41years. We owned only one (Honda Pilot) automatic. She was VERY adamant about every car we owned. She would seldom look at automatics. We waited almost 8 months for a manual transmission C300. There are little old ladies, but there are also little old “girls” who refuse to grow up. My wife was one of them and I loved her all the more because of it.
Good story John you’re a lucky man my 1st wife just turned 70 and she can row a 4 speed with the best of them there are indeed old girls still out there shoulda hung onto her 👴
My mom drove a 5 speed Honda from 1980 until she gave up her driver’s license in 2004 when she turned 90 (nine zero).
By the way, this Mustang would make an excellent driver.
That little old lady knows her mods…
The “old lady” was also apparently quite good at picking good performance products for the car too!
Except she could have picked a 3.08 rear?
Video on the Ebay add is telling. Definitely has a lumpy idle but also has an abnormal surging going on.
Good ear. My ’86 did that too many years back. It was a long time ago but I think all I needed to do was clean a sensor in the throttle body and that was it. I wouldn’t let that deter you or anyone from bidding, it’s nothing serious. In the 30 years i’ve owned it, in and out of storage, etc. it’s been the one car that always starts on the first bump of the key. These are very reliable, get in and go machines.
I had a childhood friend whose Mom, in 1981, bought a new Z28, black with red stripes & red interior, tee tops & a 4 speed (looking back, it might have been a 1980, or even 1978 or 1979 lol). Either way, she bought it new.
By now, she would be at least 75, approaching 80. She loved that car, & I am fairly confident that she would still own it if she is still alive.
This very well could be a little old lady Mustang.
Little old lady probably got a LOT of thumbs ups..wonder if she ever came over to myrtle beach for the stang fest. These are both nice mustangs
Nice looking Mustang. I’d drive it (hard) till the wheels fell off.
I’ve always loved that Ford “GT-40” tubular intake that they have on this car. A used example runs about $700, give or take, now-a-days.
