The Lead Sled: 1951 Plymouth Custom
When I think of a lead sled, I usually think of a Ford or Mercury with a chopped top. But seeing a lowered Plymouth with a removable hard top isn’t exactly unwelcome! In fact, I like the front end better. The silver paint gives it a cool custom look (thank you for not painting flames on it!) that is unmistakably modern. The white walls work well too! Find this cool custom Plymouth in Dayton, Ohio and here on craigslist.
See? There’s the front end that I mentioned. It works well with this custom look. It doesn’t detract from the custom body work with hundreds of pounds of chrome. The badges and trim have been removed. The body may have been channeled but it doesn’t say specifically in the ad. It does say that a four-link rear suspension with adjustable coil overs has been installed. The fender skirts need some work though.
The amount of custom work that has been done has made this a unique lead sled. Today we tend to want to preserve this old cars in their original state, but this is a cool way to make a unique ride out of a basic two door Plymouth sedan.
The car isn’t perfect with some small dents in the bumpers, a hard top that needs to be recovered and some interior work that needs to be completed. The seller says that it can be driven just the way it is or improved. With the flat 6 and 3 on the tree this will make great custom cruiser for someone. But the seller says that it isn’t for sale and he is only open to trades for a pre-1972 vehicle.

These post war Plymouths were never good looking cars. I like the side view of this car. Too bad, the front gives it away.
Rat Fink lives!
You have to admit both Ed Roth and this car are unconventional. I like it in a funny way.
When I think of a lead sled I can’t help but think of Stallone in “COBRA”, loved that movie.
Never a fan of the boxy ’49 – ’54 Plymouths, but this looks good to me.
What dowdy cars these were. The top and body mods really gives this car style and gracefulness.
“Hard top?” That there be a Carson top. This is one cool car, or it could be. Repad the top, get the fenderskirts to FIT the wheel openings, and French in some sort of rolled grill opening. It’d be killer.
