More Than Meets the Eye: 1922 Overland
While this listing on craigslist is just for the 1922 Overland seen here, there’s a lot more happening in this dusty barn than a solitary orphan car. Listed for $9,000, the seller says the ad is listed on behalf of a friend and the contact her for more information. No other information is offered, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the idea behind it was to generate a groundswell of curiosity in what else is stashed in this Central California barn. What else do you see here that catches your eye? The first thing I noticed is how well preserved the Overland is. I called it an “orphan” earlier because the brand was shuttered and absorbed into other companies like Willys, which was (not surprisingly) known as Willys-Overland. That name would change again to Whippet, before it ceased operations permanently in 1939. What do you think is lurking next to the Overland?
Here’s yet another car we couldn’t see in the other two photos. The rafters are also packed with potentially interesting equipment. For sure, this listing is worth a phone call if you’re hunting for a nicely preserved Overland, but it also warrants a conversation to find out if any other cars are up for grabs. Does anyone near San Luis Obispo want to investigate?

There are a lot of interesting vehicles in those pics. Shame I no longer live a few hours’ drive from where they’re parked, as it would be fun to have a look. I will admit that I am suspicious that the ad is being ‘posted for a friend’, but it may be legit.
I’m guessing that the Overland has a fixed ‘California’ top that were often installed on phaetons/touring cars, kind of the 1920s precursor to the famous ‘Carson Tops’. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the marque can shed some more light? (pun intended)
Beautiful , reminds me of ‘My Mother the Car’ with a young Jerry Van Dyke and the voice of Ann Sothern as the car .
I’m sorry, Shawn, but that has got to be the worst show that was ever on TV. And you had to go and remind me of it. Now I can’t get that image out of my mind :-(
Here’s a useless bit of trivia for you, Shawn: The 1928 ‘Porter’ was, in fact, Norm Grawbowski’s T touring, in disguise. I think Norm sold it to the production company that did the show.
I’m sure there are many folks on Craigslist looking for a 1922 Overland. Or the Studebaker. Or the Eldorado. Or that vaguely “furrin” looking Twenties vehicle next to it

Overland built some FINE cars in the ots and teens, but lost it’s way and market share as the twenties marched on. Willy’s got the lion’s share of Jeep production during the war, and did well into the 60’s. Absorbed into AMC, who was eaten up by Chrysler, by a long stretch of corporate identity, Overland is still with us in some small way. I would love to find a 1912-ish big Overland touring car.
