My Name Is Joe: This Is My Salvage Yard
Thanks reader Olaf E. for sending us a link to this great craigslist ad – fun in Muskegon, Michigan for sure, where a guy named Joe has a salvage yard with quite a few interesting cars, trucks and parts for sale or trade.
The ad copy is short and sweet: I BUY, SELL AND TRADE OLD VINTAGE CARS AND TRUCKS. I HAVE SOME FOR SALE AND OPEN TO TRADES. I OWN A SALVAGE YARD AND DO THIS FOR FUN. CALL ME IF YOU SEE SOMETHING YOU NEED OR WANT OR SELL ME.
The pictures reveal some interesting finds. This is a yard I would love to see in person (as long as there are no snakes!) The first picture above shows a ’50 or ’51 Chevy two door sedan and a ’62 four door. The next one shows a very solid looking 1953 (or ’54?) Pontiac (Star Chief maybe?) and some newer cars in the background, indicating the breadth of this yard’s offerings. And the third photo shows an intriguing 1952 Ford pick up stored indoors, and looking like it might recently have been a driver.
Anyone know what this truck is, or was? Is it a collection of pieces from a variety of vehicles? There’s an early ’90s Saab 900 behind it and up in the top left a 1976 Olds ’98 that may be worth a look.
This looks like an early ’50s Chevy or GMC truck in pieces. This looks like a pile of parts but do you see potential here?
Can anyone identify this truck cab? The basis for a hot rod, maybe.
Two potentially restorable early ’50s Ford pick ups. Could one or both of these be rebuilt?
This is a really interesting engine. It looks sort of like a flathead Ford, but it’s got to be something else. I am sure one of our knowledgeable readers can tell us what this is. Do any of our readers know this yard? What can you tell us about it? It sure looks like a good one, especially if the yard owner is a reasonable seller.

that is a flat head cadillac engine.
Pickup can is 32, the only year Ford tried the removable firewall. Flathead V8 is a Cadillac (37-48).
Looks more like a ’30 A-bone to me. Notice the gas cap on the cowl and the model A radiator shell.
That last picture of the motor is from a 40’s Caddy (probably a 47). I used to have one and recognized the way the exhaust manifoldcrosses over the back of the motor. Great engine. They learned a lot about about building engines during WWII.
I would have said caddy or Lincoln. Same designer.
Have you a ’46 Mercury convertible somewhere in there? Wonder if one still exists. It was my first real car as a junior in HS.
Here’s a 46 Merc convertible, but it’s been rodded. Nice job, tho

Thanks Rick. You’re right it really is a nice job despite it being “rodded.” Mine was what would now be called a survivor. This one does bring back memories though.
That engine is a Cadillac or Lasalle V8. Note that the intake and exhaust manifolds are on the top of the engine.
It’s a Cadillac passenger car engine. LaSalles don’t have the ribs on the heads. I’ve got a ’38 LaSalle engine over here in Australia.
My father in law lives nearby…I will forward this to him and maybe he’ll check the place out and I’ll report back.
Tom D,
Ask your father in-law to ask about the blue ’63 Ford Galaxie. How much rust and how much money? I could be interested if it isn’t too much or too rusted.
I could pick it up with a trailer.
I’m liking that 63 Ford Galaxy in the background..
Nice find..
I once looked at an old Cadillac a 32 I think that’s looks the engine that was in it wish I could have bought it had all the original stuff still on but needed full restoration was m adequate for a Golf tournament only a few made
I am pretty sure the engine is a WWII tank engine, fits in the M5 Stuart tank. Takes two of them shoeh-horned into the back.
Cadillac motors were used in some WWII tanks.
Ooh, junkelicious! Makes me wish I lived in the States!
I wonder if he has any 64 Rambler Americans.
Paul,
How about a 58 Rambler 2-door wagon? I have one for sale.
