Mystery Field Find: 1969 Pontiac Firebird

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The owner of the subject car has passed away and his widow needs to sell this forgotten automobile. She doesn’t know what it is, but from the limited photos, the vehicle appears to have once been a 1969 Pontiac Firebird convertible. Its running condition is unknown, but given where it sits, we suspect it does not. Located in a field in Harrah, Oklahoma, this project Poncho is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $5,000.

Operating on the assumption this car is a ’69 Firebird, it’s one of 87,000 built in the “pony car’s” third year of production. It debuted in 1967 along with the Chevy Camaro, becoming the third-best seller in the field once it was fully populated by competitors. As a canvas top vehicle, it would have been one of about 11,600 assembled by Pontiac that model year.

What else don’t we know about the car? Is it a V8 or inline-6? What type of transmission does it have? Did it run in recent years? What kind of shape is the bodywork and interior in? The seller says her husband had plans of fixing up the car, but never got around to it. Considering this machine likely has a lot of rust, what’s a reasonable price for what may end up becoming a parts car? Whaetver this car is, it’s a tip brought to us by “BCB42”.

I think she’s gone. Not the lady (bless her heart), but the car. Parts car at most.

Hubby was “a-gonna git to that” and refused to ever sell. Yet never got to it. Shame for someone who could’ve built a dream car.

I most likely am wrong but it looks like I can see speaker holes behind the rear seat, could this be a hardtop that was cut off?

      You are right.

I feel bad for the seller. She doesn’t seem to know anything about the car and there is a good chance she’s been told by “experts” it’s a valuable convertible. I hope she’s under the impression it’s valuable rather than asking an unrealistic amount because she’s in desperate need of money. Many of the “potential” buyers that contact her are likely going to be less than respectful. The anonymity of internet has a tendency to bring out the worst in some people and those people aren’t the type that can differentiate between someone that’s mistaken and someone running a scam In the end, she’ll probably be lucky if she doesn’t have to pay to have the car hauled away.

Oh my gosh, not much difference between a dream and a nightmare. This one is proof of that.

Grandpa had a fight with that 24 pack of Old Milwaukee, and the Firebird lost.

OMG… the garbage that people try to sell. I’d even be ashamed to claim I owned a wreck like this.

Can i use and adjust the lines from the original Road House movie….

Adjusted… from when Patrick S. (Dalton) is looking at the then beater running Nail Head Buick Riv… Just after seeing the Firebird…

Car Sales Man on the Pontiac..
    “She’ NOT a runner”..

    Dalton..(fictitious line to car salesman)
This car looks like she was beaten down and lost a fight with an angry owner with a can opener.

Convertible quarter panels would not be that high and cut at an angle like that. The structural integrity is gone in the car, and it has probably sagged into the ground. Look at the Facebook posting on this car and look at the other vehicles that are for sale all trash.

Half that price goes to a landscaper service.

Greg G, don’t know where that came from but good luck.

Anyway, pertaining to the 69 bird. I would make sure that all the properties are insured.
I would grab a diesel can. Poke a few small holes in the side and bottom. Walk around until the can is empty. Accidently drop a match. Walk over to the chauffeur driven 67 vette, go uptown and have a refreshing adult beverage.

$5000? Ah no. The widow’s gettin terrible advice. Call the nearest salvage yard; they’ll give ya $50 & get the memory off your property.

it is 100 percent not a convertiable. why you can see the panel behind the back seat for speakers the holes are there. no top rales folded down. top was cut off at one time. hope there is a clear title that is the only way it will sell being a hard top with no top.

Could be used as a nice planter box. I’d consider it for that if $500.
