Muscle Wagon: 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Wagon
For just one year, Chevrolet had a Chevelle SS Wagon roll off its assembly line. One of these rare examples is available here on eBay with a starting bid of $4,500 and no reserve.
Located in Moreno Valley, California, this Chevelle SS Wagon has a clean and clear title. The exterior of the wagon has some issues such as paint fade, minor dents, and a spot of rust beginning to form on the roof. Otherwise, the seller claims it is a garage kept and rust free vehicle.
When it comes to the interior of this Chevelle, attention will be necessary. Both the front and rear seats need recovering, the dashboard material is cracking, and the radio is missing. Given what it is, it shouldn’t be too difficult or expensive to find the necessary parts to fix it back up though.
Under the hood, the V8 engine appears to be in great shape. The owner claims that it runs just as good as it looks, and the transmission also shifts excellently. Despite this, the seller recommends giving the vehicle a tune-up before it will see any serious road duty.
While this may not be the most desirable Chevelle SS out there, there is something very cool about the design elements found on this wagon model, such as the long roof and sloping rear end. The seller claims that Chevrolet only produced 1,500 examples of the Chevelle SS wagon, which certainly bolsters this vehicle’s appeal. Would you give this wicked wagon a tune up and drive it as is, or would you give it a full restoration?

Cool….a four-door El Camino with permanent topper!
Looks like AMC Pacer on steroids! What no LS5/6 either? Meh
What does the SS package consist of besides the emblems?
I’m not sure about the wagons but on the coupes it included suspension upgrades, larger radiator, different ratio rear end among other things.
Two-tone paint pkg.; 350 4bbl. standard, with 454 4 bbl optional. (I think) guage package, deluxe interior trim, (originally) cast aluminum wheels/white letter tires, swivel front buckets/console automatic optional, etc.
My parents had one of these SS wagons new when I was 15. I considered it stone ugly at the time due to the crash bumpers and new body style; it’s still an acquired taste. Original SS badging consisted of just decals; no actual emblems other than in grille. This car has earlier SS emblems installed. SS was an appearance package only: blacked-out grille, SS decals, lower body accent paint in gray or charcoal, all with a wheezy 350 and terrible build quality. Still, a seldom seen GM colonnade model with an unusual option package.
Now this is a cool wagon! Though I prefer the later Classic’s quad headlight setup, these are great-looking wagons and I predict this gen Malibus to become the coming sought-after vehicles. That’s kinda late, as these have been completely overshadowed by the 64-72 A-bodies and the following G- bodies far too many years. Most will have rotted away by now…
Boy, No love! If this was a ’72 SS there be at “2” in front of that 4 with healthy bidding! The colonnade redesign of the GM A-body is a great example of a sales success that didn’t translate into collectability.
It worked out well for GM, as these sold very well during their era. But it probably caused a lot of long-term regret for people who traded in a 1968 to 72 Chevelle on a 1973 to 77 Malibu or Monte Carlo.
Anyway back to substance, I kind of like this. Not in a position to buy it now but this would be a pretty cool parts hauler. Get rid of that awful window tinting, put some good wide black wall tires on it, put on a good dual Flowmaster exhaust to make it sound mean, and drive it as is.
Probably THE lowest production Chevelle “SS” model made. The ‘Collonade’ `73-`77 Chevelles weren’t everyone’s fave, but interest is growing by the day. Seen only one other in recent years for sale; burnt orange metallic with black lower and it sold quick. Odd this one would have the standard bench; I’d try to find swivel buckets/console auto for it. Originally, this would’ve been black with silver lower & a thin stripe separating the colors.
I would call this one “Stormy” (as in Danials) cuz I’d love to see it ” Done” ,but do not wish to be the one doin it or paying the hefty price !
I dig it, even though I think colonnades are the absolute ugliest generation of GM produced vehicles (and I’m a GM guy). They’re awful.
Wagon makes it palleatable.
To me, with a wheezy ‘73 era SBC, this would awesome candidate for a junkyard 5.3, AOD trans and daily it
Love it! Want to see more of this gen at the shows…. tired yawn of the same earlier gens….nice to see something different “and I’m a GM guy”
The colonade GM intermediates were hated in my opinion because of the loss of the availability of true hardtop and convertibles.
Needs a big block definitely! 9″ Ford rear, discs all around maybe 16-18 s. Maybe bucket seats in from same yr coupe! Power Tour here we come!
It’s been relisted at a $3,000 starting price.
My parents had a 75 Malibu wagon with woodgrain sides (IIRC). I had just gotten my license and it was fun (and a bit dangerous) to set the cruise control while driving on backroads. It was the first car I drove that had cruise control.
Never liked this body style, kind of a bubble in back
