Jeff in the Junkyard: Eastern Shore Finds

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

As some of our long-time readers know, I used to spend a fair amount of time stomping around junkyards on the weekends. Well, having a child greatly limits your free time (at least initially, until they can join you), so my favorite pastime has taken a backseat to child rearing. That said, I still managed to sneak out to a yard over Thanksgiving with my brother near his home on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Check out some of the more interesting cars I spotted here and in the gallery below.

This wasn’t the most well-stocked junkyard I’ve been in, but they still had some interesting classics with plenty of parts left to give. My elder sibling was on the hunt for parts for his Willys Jeep project, and amazingly, he found the carcass of a ’48 or ’49 model that had some tailgate hinges he needed. I did spot a fairly clean Mercedes 190E from which I grabbed the trunk carpeting, but I didn’t find much else to ship home.

This Chevy truck cab was clearly missing its hindquarters, but the front clip still had plenty of good, straight metal to salvage and a decent windshield. I counted about 25 classics in this yard, with the rest of the inventory being made up of late-model Ford and GM products – nothing worth writing home about. If you peeked under the hood, you’d find the motor was still nestled inside the chopped cab.

This AMC Eagle wagon bore parking stickers that indicated it wasn’t off the road all that long. These all-weather capable wagons were so durable and cheap to own that I wonder what prompted the previous owner to throw in the towel. Of course, with Mt. Washington College nearby, there’s likely plenty of good, old cars that end up in places like this when impatient students write-off the (free) family car.

This one made me cringe, as the 4WD Mitsubishi Mighty Maxes are near impossible to find north of the Mason-Dixon, and this one looked quite nice before an unfortunate roll-over ended its road-going tenure. It looked like the driver took a bit of a hit as well! Check out the old wagon in the background – I believe it’s a Ford Torino, and this beast still had snow tires on her! Which classic would you rescue from this Maryland salvage yard?

Nothing better than wandering around in an old junkyard. This one, I find odd in that everything is placed just anywhere and cars are mixed with real junk. I’ve not been in automotive junk yard like this where everything is willy-nilly dropped just in any place and facing in any direction. I’d guess the owners heart is just not in it. Being OC though, I’d be wandering around rolling up windows, closing hoods, doors, and trunks protecting what’s left from the weather and critters.

That would be Washington College, in Chestertown, no mountains anywhere around there.

My Dad had a friend with a 67-68 Caddy Sedan that same turquoise color. He lived in Cambridge MD and really makes me wonder if it’s the same car.

      Since that’s a ’72, it would seem unlikely…

I’m guessing the car pictured is a 71 or 72. The 67-68 models had the vertically placed headlights .

I live in Chestertown, MD, and have never seen this place! Please provide the name/location so I can visit.

And of course for any B/F members who have an interest in any vehicles there, let me know and I will be glad to check it out for you.

Jeff; next time you find yourself in the area, do let me know!

Bill (and others), it’s called Bennett & Cohey. Wonder if you guys know the same people since it’s a small town. If you see a light blue ’86 911 rolling around town, that’s my brother. He usually goes to Cars on High with his family, in either the ’86 or one of the two 2001 / 2003 models they own.

I live in southern Delaware. Let me know if you see an ’86 or ’87 Sunbird GT in any of the area yards or used car lots!

Jeff, I know Wayne Bennett & Billy well, and Billy told me several years ago he got rid of all the older cars, as they are concentrating on recycling scrap metals instead of cars, because of the Maryland’s onerous amount of paperwork to scrap a vehicle. Will have to take a closer look & wander out back. I’ve seen the 911 from time to time. Thanks!

Whoa, i live about 45 minutes from this yard. Theres alot of old salvage and scrap yards around the eastern shore, sadly most are crushing the classic stuff. Used to be a really good one right outside of greensboro.
