Hot Hatch Survivor: 1987 Volkswagen Golf GT Mk2
Up for sale is an amazing, high mile, hot hatch survivor from the ’80s. Even with the miles, this 1987 Volkswagen Golf GT Mk2 is in great shape and can keep on racking up the miles. This beautiful car is located in Miami, Florida and you can find it here on eBay. The seller has listed a Buy-It-Now price of $8,500 or you can make an offer. Posted in the listing is the VIN, a claimed clear title and 199,500 miles on the odometer.
The 1.8 liter 4-cylinder engine for the GT is the GTI engine of the previous year. That would have reached 102 horsepower and it is connected to a 5-speed manual transmission. As you can tell from the photos, the engine is in great condition for the number of miles it has. The pipes and hoses look strong and rust-free if they are metal. There does not appear to be any grease or other fluids leaking anywhere.
Inside, this car has a complete, clean, and comfortable looking two-tone interior. The seller does not indicate they have been restored, so for their age, they are in great condition with no tears or rips that one can see in the photos. Also noted is that the car does have its original tape deck radio. One of the cooler features is the sunroof, which is manually operated, is said to function. The car also wears its original paint.
The seller says that the purchaser will receive a clean carfax with the purchase, along with original books and manuals which are featured in one of the photos. It is hard to determine just how valuable this car is. With the Buy-It-Now price being reasonable and the ability to make an offer, you could score yourself a very hot hatchback. Not many of these show up in this condition so you will want to act fast on this one!

200k miles and asking $8500 dollars? Wow!
It’s a dream price. Knowing VW enthusiasts, somebody has or soon will offer to trade a pan of hash brownies for it.
Indeed. If this were a 70K car then the price would be justified. If were a 70K 16 valve car then it could go much higher.
I’m a hot-hatch nut and I’m willing to pay up for rarity and condition, that being said, $6K would be my tippy top.
Is this a joke listing?
Drugs?
Gee Wally, that’s seems kind of expensive for a car that was probably thrashed around for a good part of its life. $8500 and you get to rebuild the engine or keep a case of oil in the hatch. I wonder if the seller meant $2500.00?
Ike, I have to agree with you, $2500.00 is all that this tired Golf is worth. Where are these people getting these numbers from?
I owned many Volkswagens from this era, including Vanagon’s, and they were all good vehicles, but definitely not worth these crazy asking prices.
200K for $8.5K???? Dream on!! Lol
While back in the day, I DID enjoy the crop out of my ’87 GTI, this one seems pricey. And I KNOW what those transmissions start doing after 150k or so…
This 1985 VW Caribe GT (We Didn’t have fuel injection in Mexico so it is not a GTI) for around the same price with 80,000 miles or the 200K Golf?
I would go for the Caribe myself.
Check out the factory Recaros with the Caribe GT lettering.
Great looking car Miguel, thanks for sharing the information on them; that colour and interior really suit the car.
They stayed with this design until 1987 in Mexico, so the feature car would be the old rabbit if it were here.
Gawd, it’s SO hard to find grilles for those – especially the GTIs! (We have an ’84 GTI)…
Dave, what grille are you looking for? Doesn’t the GTI grille have the round headlights?
’83 and ’84 GTi’s had the square headlights like the one you posted. MK1 Autohaus has square grilles new, you need to paint the red stripe and get the GTi badge.
This is more a warm hatch. The GTI 16V was the hot hatch. I doubt even one of those would bring this sort of coin though, but they are hard to find in good original condition.
The Ebay ad says “original color” and note the GTI grill badge is missing. Think it might be a $3000 car with a $3000 paint job and a $2500 dealer profit.
8-valve engine + rear drum brakes = lukewarm hatch at best. Cute car, but it’s a standard Golf with alloy wheels.
With 83-84 Gti snowflakes not original to an 87
Fun facts
87 Golfs had specific dashboards, dash inserts and grills that only fit 87s.
Golf GTs came with close ratio transmissions and were the watered down version of the GTI after the 16V was introduced.
When I met my wife, she had a 87 GT and I had a 90 8V GTI, and I’m kicking myself for not hanging on to her car.
