Heavy Sleeper! Supercharged 1996 Caprice Classic
By 1996, the market for a full sized, body-on-frame sedan with V8 power and rear-wheel-drive encompassed mainly professionals accustomed to being addressed as “Officer,” “Agent,” or “Special Agent.” As one might expect from a vehicle designed for law-enforcement duty, this generation of Chevrolet’s Caprice, built from 1991 to 1996, earned a reputation for longevity and reliability. While Chevy built a sporty “Impala SS” from 1994 to 1996, its performance parts certainly never included this car’s Paxton supercharger. This low-mileage 1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, an epic sleeper, seeks a new owner here on Cleveland, Ohio craigslist with an asking price of $6500. Thanks to reader Michael M. for spotting this well-kept stealth weapon.
Anyone of driving age in the mid 1990s to mid 2000s would identify these instruments and the cool blue digital LEDs as originating from General Motor’s corporate parts bin of that era. Showing fewer than 44,000 original miles, this big Chevy appears capable of providing the new owner with many comfortable miles.
The slightly dirty cloth seats may not offer heat, or cooling, or leather, or 16-way power, or Shiatsu massage, but they’re probably as likely to leave you refreshed after a nine-hour drive as any 2018 car seat. The seller reports cold air conditioning, hot heat, no rust, and an interior and exterior as unblemished as the pictures suggest. The listing’s lost art of describing a vehicles imperfections suggests the seller benefited from good parenting, or at least a modicum of empathy.
The Impala SS drew a cult following, with aftermarket parts ideal for making a sleeper out of a Plain Jane sedan like this Caprice. This Chevy features aftermarket electronic fuel management and in-car adjustable timing, and dual exhaust. The upgraded performance may not shock any late-model Chrysler SRTs, but it might dust off a Charger R/T. What kind of fun could you have with this $6500 sleeper?

Save the whales.
Laugh it up chuckle head…this is not big…my 73 is big….call it a whale in front of me ill lay you flat….go drive your camry….
Lighten up, Francis.
Wow dude.
Chill out dork. Go get in your safety bumper ’73 and comb your mullet to calm yourself down.
You drive a Whale!? You ain’t driven nuthin until you’ve been behind the wheel of the same vintage G10 with blown out shocks! Big, lumbering, floaty.
Like driving a cloud, yet worse. :)
Down with the “rice burners” & their “wannabes”. I’m with Sanity Factor on this issue.
I don’t think that this meant in a negative manner. Due to the bulbous style, this generation of car is often referred to as a whale. Due to fact that this body style of GM B body was the last body on frame car, the saying took hold.
If only it were a Wagon. Yes I said it.
I’ll say it, too! I have had an abiding fear that the big “Tri-Nine” wagons will be gone before I can afford a garage big enough for one–or more.
Proud owner of a 1991 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon here!
Always dreamed of doing the same thing to an Impala S S either a supercharger or nitrous oxide, this is more of a sleeper than an SS, definitely would be lots of fun
I guess you could always add a bolt-on N2O kit to this one, assuming the engine’s in reasonable shape. If not, you’ll find out, pretty quickly!
Seems like a fair price if the car is all that it’s supposed to be.
Oh I would enjoy this fine engine upgrade. Would be glad to fill a garage with reasonably priced fun cars like this and use them. The “sleeper” applies, but I think a sleeper also needs to blend in with today’s vehicles.
That is a vacuum florescent display not an LED.
Thanks, edh! If anyone wants to take a car geek moment I found this article that discusses the technology. https://www.explainthatstuff.com/how-vacuum-fluorescent-displays-work.html
The mid-90’s Impalas at one time were in high demand in Saudia Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. Could still be.
Just my opinion, but those ’90s Chevys were not attractive cars. Big with bland styling. I’m sure many have enjoyed them and like them but I never cared for them. I thought the Crown Vics were better looking big cars, their styling was certainly less bloated than the Chevys. Still, if you like the big Chevys from the ’90s, you couldn’t do much better than this one.
While I am a chevy/ GM guy, and owner of a 91 Olds custom cruiser wagon, I will say the last gen crown vic was a decent looking car. TOo bad they ran like a three legged dog, though.
Cool sleeper the only thing i never liked about these car’s the rear wheels were never quite centered in the wheel opening which could be corrected with aftermarket upper & lower trailing arms, still a neat sleeper car
Good car to cruise the USA inconspicuously.
Put on some cheap sunglasses tilt the seat back and just drive drive drive. Probably a pretty fast car the way it’s set up, but take it easy and just enjoy the ride. If needed then mash the pedal and leave em wondering what just smoked their doors.😎
That thing would be hilarious fun to own. A stop light screamer.
Looks like the caprice I sold 2years ago. Is it in Ohio,
