Humpty Dumpty: 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Plymouth gave the Barracuda an extreme makeover in 1970 and sales increased by 50% to nearly 49,000 units. In that mix was the ‘Cuda performance hardtop with a 383 cubic inch V8 and a 4-speed transmission, a rare combination at only 1,900 copies. This one was taken apart years ago and there are doubles of some parts and none of others. From Platteville, Wisconsin, it’s all packed away in a trailer that you could also buy. Bidding for the car itself stands at $9,200 here on eBay, the reserve is unmet, and the pass/go take-it-home price is $19,500.

What you see is what you get as the seller bought this car in the condition you see it about a year and a half ago. But other projects add up to no time for him/her to restore this automobile and put Humpty Dumpty together again. This was a numbers-matching car at some point and the seller has two build sheets to back it up. We’re told the manual transmission is in there somewhere but does not discuss the status of the engine and its whereabouts.

Most of the discussion pertains to sheet metal. For example, a new trunk floor has been installed as well as a new left front fender because a leaking battery did a number on the original. One of the quarter panels has a patch on it. Known things on the MIA list are the grille and windshield. To make up for it, two decklids are available for the buyer’s choosing. And some new pieces are there, like parts of the interior (bucket seats, rear seats, and a Rallye instrument cluster.

If I were to buy this car, I’d want an inventory of everything that’s there and what isn’t. But in this case, you may have to accept that what’s there is it and be prepared to add to your shopping list when you start putting the car back together. But you’ve really got to enjoy work like this to buy a trailer full of parts and pieces. BTW, you may want to see what the seller wants for the 2012 American Hauler trailer so you don’t have to unpack it to get the project home.

You won’t know what’s all missing till you start to put it together.

I actually won the auction and now own this car and the trailer. To clear up a couple of misinformation, the engine and 4 speed trans are both numbers matching. It came with NOS door panels, NOS front and rear bumpers as well as the original bumpers, and all the parts to put the entire car back together except the drive shaft, grill and windshield and back glass. It is completely rust free and all original deep burnt orange paint. Front fenders are not original to the car, but are original Cuda fenders. The trailer is a 2015, not a 2012 like mentioned and is a beautiful trailer. I bought it for 12500.00 and have just sold it for 12500.00. I won the auction at6 15000.00 which in my opinion was a steel. So I thank everyone who didn’t bid on this car. This is a rust free all numbers matching 70 383 Cuda 4 speed with the fender tag and 2 build sheets. Again, thanks for all the negative comments and not bidding on the car :) I got the last laugh :)
