Incredibly Original: 1950 Fiat 1400 Vignale Orchidea
This stunning automobile is believed to be one of less than five in existence and has been in long-term single-family ownership until just recently. The 1950 Fiat 1400 Vignale Orchidea has just 30,000 miles from new and remained with the original family through 2019. The seller notes it has seen very little in the way of alterations aside from receiving a fresh paint job some 20 years ago but has otherwise never been restored. The Fiat is located in Florence, Italy, and is supposedly a well-known specimen around the community, and the seller includes photos in the gallery from when the car (and the family that purchased it) was much younger. Find the Fiat here on Barn Finds Classifieds with an asking price of $170,000.
In typical Vignale fashion, the Fiat is quite ornate with loads of intricate details in the design. While the finished product is usually quite fetching, restoring one back to new can be an exhaustive effort given spares aren’t exactly in strong supply. This is why you want to start with a car like this if you’re a fan of limited-production Italian models built by an exclusive coachbuilder like Vignale. There are touches of Ferrari in the design, obviously not the F40 and Testarossa eras, but the likes of the Ferrari 212 coupe – throw on a set of Borrani wire wheels and I wonder what we’d think of this beautiful Fiat. The interior appointments are luxurious and appear to be in outstanding condition. It’s incredible that these are original details we’re looking at.
The inline four-cylinder engine is quite humble and reportedly makes less than 50 horsepower. Despite this meager output, the seller notes that it has competed in driving events without issue, which likely speaks more to its healthy running condition rather than any ability to take down more powerful cars. The seller notes that it participated in the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti in 2019 with no problem. That race has a wonderful history, beginning as a road event with tremendous elevation changes that was also open to public traffic and run through the mountains of northern Italy. Along those same lines, the Fiat is Mille Miglia eligible, which opens up its potential use to a wide range of possible buyers. It seems that MM entrants live in a unique world hovering between priceless classics and vintage beaters, showing no hesitation to put a one-off car through its paces.
The Fiat is striking from end to end, which beautiful chrome bumpers, perfect taillight lenses, and an incredibly unique plexiglass rear window. Those bumpers are original if you can believe it, and even with single-family ownership, I find it absolutely amazing that they managed to keep this Fiat in such incredible shape. The seller claims this is practically a no-needs car, with perfectly functioning steering, brakes, engine, and electrical systems. While we are mesmerized by barn finds and have to wind our jaws back up over some vintage car restorations, finding a clearly loved survivor is perhaps the best of both worlds, and we hope the next owner of this Fiat cherishes it as much as the original family did.

Well that’s just too darn nice and valuable to drive.
But it should be driven,& enjoyed.
One beautiful and rare car for sure!
Beautiful car . Never saw one before, thank you Barn Finds. This is Italian royalty. When most Italians were riding Vespas this was a the way to go if you could afford it. Let the next caretaker not lock this away in some private collection, but exercise it judiciously.
They made some beautiful Fiats.
And that beauty now translates into many $$.

If I were wealthy and lived in Europe, this would be an excellent car to show and use in events, and honestly much more appealing to me than the usual big dollar classics. Why? Because it would be the only one there, probably every single time.
The greenhouse, especially at the rear, is very attractive and stylish. Love the color combo and how the dash being painting in the exterior color makes the interior so striking. 50 horsepower? Plenty for driving down rural lanes in Italy, feeling like a million bucks.
1st of the year. I try’n remember the vehicles U guys (not just Jeff) show that I’ve never seen (in person of thru pic). The 1st pic I woulda said “french”, but hey, those guys traded back’n forth all the time (now?).
From the era I 1st started wrenchin on (still justa deep hobby – w/”even cash” ora free car to drive fora while).
I’ll remember this one, thanks !
