For Parts or Restoration: 1954 MG TD

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The MG T-Type is a series of body-on-frame 2-seat open sports cars that were produced by MG from 1936 to 1955. During this time, there were many iterations of the same car, including the MG TD which we think this example is from the cowl tag (limited photos are not helpful). The cars would later be replaced by the MGA. Located northwest of Baltimore, Maryland, this project will need an undetermined amount of work and is available here on craigslist for as little as $111 (that’s the price the seller went with). Our thanks to Chuck Foster for the tip.

Though contemporary in styling when it was first introduced in the mid-1930s, the T-Type was outdated by the time the 1950s rolled around. The MG TD was a Midget that combined the TC’s drivetrain with a modified hypoid-geared rear axle, the MG Y-type chassis, and independent suspension on the front axle using coil springs from the MG Y-Type. The first TD was built in late 1949 as a 1950 model. Out of the 30,000 TDs built, nearly 80% were shipped for consumption in the U.S., its primary market.

We’re given few details about the seller’s car and the lack of description and photos are similar to a 1957 T-Bird we recently profiled from the same area. The assumption here is that seller has run across a barn or basement full of old cars that he/she has little information about and is trying to get them out of the way. We don’t know if the little MG is complete, but it will need a total restoration (at least it comes with a title. The seller will provide more details if you text or call, so why not put that info in the listing to begin with? Craigslist doesn’t charge extra.

TDs were built from 1950-53 TFs from 54-55. The car pictured is a TD.

The engine number would appear to indicate that this car was built in June 1953, and would thus have been a 1953 model. The TF replaced the TD in the 1954 model year.

It’s a late TD with round tail-lights and central wiper motor, finished on June 17,1953.

Love it. Sure wished I had a place to put it and start working on it. This would be a great project to do.
