First Year Offering! 1968 AMC Javelin

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The AMC Javelin first hit the dealerships as a 1968 model and was hailed as the brand’s entry into the pony car market, a very hot segment in the industry at the time and a pretty cool offering from the non-conformist U.S. auto manufacturer.  The car was available in several trim levels and came with some decent engine choices, and while this one’s at the bottom of the food chain in the power department it’s still bound to create a lot of attention wherever you go, plus it’ll be easy on your wallet too, at least for the initial investment.  This 1968 AMC Javelin can be spotted here on eBay, where the bidding has reached only $3,550 so far, and while that’s short of the reserve it can also be owned today for the buy-it-now price of $6,350.  This one’s located in San Tan Valley, Arizona, and we’d like to thank reader PRA4SNW for bringing it to our attention!

The first thing many of you will notice is the color, as AMC didn’t offer purple for their ’68 Javelin, but you could get Scarab Gold, and based on the paint under the hood I believe that’s how this car started out.  But the color change must have taken place a long time ago, as there’s some patina going on here and unfortunately, also some rust in the quarter panels and around the rear wheel openings.  Some good news is the rest of the body appears pretty good overall and reasonably straight, so it seems like a decent starting point on the outside if the future owner wants to take the exterior to the next level.

The smallest powerplant you could get during the inaugural year was a 232 inline 6 banger, and that’s exactly what’s under the hood of this one.  And it’s not that this was a bad engine, quite the contrary, as these were very durable and pretty hard to tear up, but buyers could also equip their Javelin with either a 290 or 343 cubic-inch V8, either of which would be a more desirable component to find here.  Although the car does run and drive, I wouldn’t be surprised if the new owner goes a different route and puts something more potent in the bay.  On the other hand, the 232 is easy to work on and isn’t all that bad of a performer, I had one for a while in a Gremlin when I was younger and was actually really pleased with it.

Basing it on the photos, I’m speculating that the interior is mostly original, and it could definitely stand some attention all the way around.  But closer to the ground comes some very good news, as the seller has provided no less than 10 photos showing the underside, which appears to be solid from every angle we get to view.  I’m thinking $6,350 is a fair price for what we’re seeing here, how about you?

The main thing here is it’s complete with no major rust. A good starting point for whatever you want to make it. Probably for another 5-10k, and lots of your own labor, you’ll have a pretty cool driver.

Says “buy it now” was $6350. Now they have it bid up past that to $6600. DUHHH !!

Wow. Someone could have had this car for $6,350, but instead of hitting the “Buy It Now,” the reserve was met so the BIN went away and now the seller is going to get more than they hoped for! I always hope this happens when I’m selling a car on eBay.

I love the purple. Look how nice it looks under the deck lid when it was fresh and not baked by the desert sun!

Had two gremlins. One with a 304 and the other a 232. The 232 was a die hard engine. I put it through all the paces I could think of and it was always ready to give more. I wonder what kind of performance improvements by adding a big bore turbo?

I had a 68 Javelin SST with 343. Nice car. Had vacuum wipers though, not good while passing in the rain!
