Feeling Lucky? 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440
The seller thinks, that restored, this Charger could be an $80,000 car! It would take a lot to get from here to there, but they may not be totally off with their assumption. Drivers go for around 30 grand and perfect examples are nearing the six-figure range. If you are up for the challenge, this project is located in San Antonio, Texas and is listed here on eBay with no reserve!
1968 was a big year for Dodge. They released a newly designed Charger that instantly caught on and eventually gained fame from its appearances in Bullit and Dukes of Hazard! Mopar also started a new campaign that featured the Scat Pack bee which can still be found on some high-performance Dodges today. It was also the first year the R/T (Road/Track) package which this car is wearing.
The R/T came standard with a huge 440 cubic inch V8. A four-barrel carburetor sat on top and it was good for about 375 horsepower. You could also get a Hemi, but the 440 was no slouch. The seller mentions that they have been told that’s the original engine. Personally, I’d have a hard time bidding without more photos or a personal inspection though.
There is rust and that isn’t the original color. This thing could be awesome after a full restoration, but keep in mind that it is going to need the works. Body, paint, mechanical, interior, everything. It’s going to take time and a lot of money, but there is a small chance you could come out ahead if you watch your pennies. What do you think – is this a gamble worth taking?

Any muscle car restored to new condition is worth good money!! $80,000 however not all of them would be worth that!! I could say with out a doubt if you were to dump $100,000 into this car it would be worth $80,000!!!

Translation, “I was told it’s the original engine”, means it’s not. No decent seller would leave that much money on the table when all that’s needed to verify if it is original is 15 minutes of time.
At least this is a no reserve auction, that will quiet those that would normally chime in about the seller trying to rip people off.

This is very very true it would only 5 minutes to add a ton of value if i where going to spend that kind of money a charger I would spend it on one that was verified numbers matching.

The R/T package first came out in 1967 , but just for the Coronet .
The engine is NOT original either ;The color is 70’s blue, it has a Carter Thermoquad and that small vacuum diaphragm makes me believe its more of a 1974-ish engine ,and it may not even be a 440 ,for all we know it could be a 400 out of a 75 Cordoba !
This is another car that could be restored , but its so far gone that you’d be replacing everything and put far more money into it than its worth. At that point you have a complete aftermarket Charger with few original parts. Better to spend your money on a more solid example
A classic case of less is more. “It’s a ’68 Charger RT with a 440 in between the fenders”. Post your pics and say no more. It will sell itself.
I hate to be “that guy” mostly because I usually hate “that guy”. But I can’t live with a nickname I’ve had a long time without mentioning that the “Dukes of Hazard” didn’t exist until 1979. Jus sayin 🙃

’68 was a solid year for both Dodge and Plymouth.
They made a strong visual statement, not just under the hood stuff but clean sporty lines and all kinds of image enhancing names and decals. Very racy…

Dukes of Hazzard Charger was a ’69, not a ’68.
When you see things like the fan pulley jammed between the exhaust manifold and the shock tower, you wonder if it’s there to help support the engine so it doesn’t tip further or if there’s something else going on . This one may have some good points on it but there’s a lot wrong with it too. A personal inspection is the only way to go on this one.
A little over a day left as I post this and the bid is at $18,700. Despite how easy it is to go underwater in restoration costs, the value of project condition Chargers is off the charts. My guess is this car will get some high dollar restomod build.

Bidding at $18,000.00. I can’t say much for this one. Too much rust, not sure about the engine, no underside pics…for starters. It is just too much work for a guy like me. But, for the ones with deeper pockets and a real desire…go for it.
That’s definitely not the original 440. This car has a few curiosities about it. It has the correct VIN for an R/T buy has an S.E. emblem in the front grill. Easily could’ve been replaced over the years but that combined with the advanced rust and missing pieces makes this car NOT an $18,000 project in my opinion. No way this car brings $80 grand done. I often hear about the classic car bubble bursting and values falling off where they’ve been and all to often we see major projects like this selling for big money. Wonder what the hell the high bidders are thinking with this car?

The engine color is correct, the dash shows a/c vents. Big Block mopars had the torques color for a/c cars.
I suspect this Charger would be worth more if it was turned into a restomod.
