Family 4×4: 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited
Buyers seemed to have had many more choices in previous decades, especially car buyers. Today, you can basically get an SUV which is most likely your choice, or a pickup, usually with four doors, of course, or a regular car in either two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. The seller has this 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon listed here on eBay in Darby, Pennsylvania and the current bid price is $4,025.
For a 36-year-old AMC product, this Eagle wagon is an elegant-looking car, I think. Maybe it’s because we rarely see them in black and I really like that look here. AMC made the 4×4 Eagle wagon from 1980 to 1988, even after AMC went bye-bye in 1987. Chrysler had already taken over the company and they kept Eagle around for another year and were called the Eagle Wagon for that final year.
See, isn’t this a great-looking car in this color, or tone? There are a few hopefully minor flaws on the exterior of this car, a few small dings and small dents here and there. Some trim is sagging, maybe from decades-old adhesive coming loose. That shouldn’t be an issue to remedy. The biggest plus with this car, aside from its formal look, is that it has no rust according to the seller. They show a few underside photos and it does look good, with just some surface rust but no other rust that I can see.
This is a Limited trim level that had leather seating surfaces – one of which needs some help here, the driver’s seat bottom. The rest of the seating areas look great. I’m surprised to not see power windows here as we often see on Limited wagons. It almost looks like there’s a clutch pedal there, doesn’t it? I know, I got excited, too, because they did offer a 5-speed version. But, this one has the three-speed Chrysler-sourced TorqueFlite automatic with a floor-mounted shifter.
The rear cargo area looks great but the headliner doesn’t look too hot. Save a few hundred bucks to redo that. And, maybe add some new carpet… and fix the driver’s seat bottom. There’s some work to do inside here.
The engine looks clean, it’s AMC’s 258 cubic-inch inline-six which would have had 115 horsepower and 210 ft-lb of torque. The seller says that this one is smooth and quiet and everything works great right down to having ice-cold air-conditioning. This really looks like a winner to me, what do you think about this Eagle wagon?

Surprisingly capable cars When Chrysler bought out AMC this and soon after the jeep Comanche went away and we got the Dodge Dakota.
I still mourn AMC’s passing.
Only 2 days 9 hours left and bidding has only reached $6,700.00?
If I had an extra $20,000, 10 more years to live, and a place to park it, it’d be sitting in my driveway.
What’s wrong with you people?
How on earth did they get a dent on the roof edge?
FACTORY STAINLESS STEEL WIRE WHEEL COVERS?
I would replace them with some nice AMC rims.
Beautiful looking car. If I didn’t already have a 4wd of my own, I’d love this car. I’ve always loved station wagons, and I’ve always loved 4wd cars.
This is quite a value at the present price. They were a really good AWD vehicle.
To Riffraff, I had a 1981 Ford Fairmont Station wagon that was loaded with a factory 4 spd. Beautiful car with the high end trim package and, here we go guys and gals, I never should have sold it.
It’s funny how we all complain about the lack of color options on today’s vehicles yet this one looks sooooooo good in black .
It is a dark blue metallic.
Blue? It’s as black as any black paint would possibly be, Lee. Even the seller refers to it as Tuxedo Black.
When I had my repair business one of my customers and his wife had two of these, a white one and black one. They were rural mail carriers and the cars were their delivery vehicles.Other than maintenance they were absolutely bulletproof except for turn signal bulbs, I replaced all of them on both cars every other month it seemed. Apparently having the four way flashers on every day for six-eight hours was hard on them. They retired and I bought the black one, absolutely loved it but a buddy needed a car and I had to many. I wish I had kept it.
An employee of my dads bought one as his first new car. He was very proud of it and I thought it was prettty cool. He put bigger wheels and tires on it right away and took pretty good care of it. But within a year stuff was falling off and it was in the shop a lot and he was pretty disappointed. He sold it long before it was paid off. It’s too bad cars were so poorly built back then. For one to survive this long looking so good speaks well of the owner’s care over the years.
Those are not the factory wheel covers for this car. Just sayin’!
Hey, Stevieg – those were actually the standard wheel covers for a Limited Eagle. aluminum wheels would have been optional.

Auction update: this great-looking Eagle wagon sold for $11,100. I’m wondering if it’ll show up on “another auction site” in the near future?
I didn’t see anything on that download that showed those wheel covers. Sorry, normally I would say thank you, I learned something new…not this time bucko lol!
Doesn’t mean you are right & I am wrong, just means the evidence wasn’t there lol. Wrong page?
Ha, sorry about that, sir. I should have mentioned that it’s on page 5 of that PDF brochure, on the right side under “Options” and then “Exterior”. It lists the wire wheel covers as being standard equipment for the Limited and the aluminum wheels as optional.
Close but no cigar. I stick with those are not correct for the vehicle. Those are for a Gran Fury or 5th Ave. Pictured is one with the correct wheel covers.
Notta big deal lol. I actually like the ones on the vehicle in question, just not factory!
Take ‘er easy Scotty!
