Future Classic? 2024 Tesla Cybertruck
You may never have heard of a sleepy little company called Tesla, its shy CEO, or its latest product. Let’s fill in the blanks as this company is horrible at PR and is rarely if ever in the news. Tesla, an American company based in Austin, Texas, makes – are you sitting down? – vehicles powered by batteries! I know! Their latest is this “Future Classic” 2024 Tesla Cybertruck, seen with a white vinyl wrap. This unassuming, clone-of-every-other-pickup can be found listed here on eBay in Wesley Chapel, Florida, and the current (no pun intended) bid price is $149,100.
Of course, I was kidding about most of the first paragraph, at least the parts about the CEO (Elon Musk) being shy and Tesla not being good at PR. I do have one suggestion for them: if they could add a laser to the front of the Cybertruck, that would be great. Gort from “The Day the Earth Stood Still” would approve. We’ve all heard about the Cybertruck, the long-lingering Covid-era exercise to produce a monster truck, at least in power if not height. I wish this were a non-wrapped Cybertruck, but you’ve all seen what they’re supposed to look like in all their sometimes mottled stainless steel livery and glory. For $6,500, Tesla sells official color paint film in 11 different colors and I’m sure other manufacturers make dozens if not hundreds of other colors and patterns. In case you’re wondering, yes, that’s the world’s biggest passenger vehicle windshield wiper, and a replacement blade will cost $75. And no, they don’t have them at Walmart.
The graffiti-like Cybertruck graphic on the tailgate is also a wrap and that would instantly go away if this were my truck, but I like the white wrap/film. We’ve only seen one Tesla here on Barn Finds, way back in February of 2018, and some would say that’s enough. Tesla Motors is a head-scratcher for me, mainly because it’s an American-based business – in Texas no less – and yet millions of Americans hate them because they make vehicles powered by batteries rather than powered by gas and oil. Tesla Motors was founded by Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard in 2003 and we never hear their names anymore, but we’ve all heard of Elon Musk.
A founder of PayPal, a company started in 2000 with his brother and sold to eBay for $1.1 billion two years later, Musk is worth almost $200 billion. Ok, it helped to be born into a real estate and emerald mining dynasty in South Africa, but he’s turned Tesla into a global powerhouse, like him or not. In 2004, he bought the majority stake in Tesla and became CEO in 2008. The rest is history. Their Model 3 sedan was the best-selling electric car globally between 2018 and 2021, and the Model Y, a small “crossover” introduced at the end of 2020, reportedly outsold even the unbeatable Toyota Corolla to become the world’s best-selling car. Who’d a thunk?
Back to the Cybertruck, certainly the company’s most talked-about vehicle. Until they come up with battery-powered personal jetpacks – and they probably will – it may be their crowing glory, at least PR-wise. We’ve seen the Ford Lightning EV pickup go from idea to being loved by everyone, to real-world testing, and then back to reality. The Cybertruck has a similar story. Most pickup owners and users say “That isn’t a real truck!!! It’s a truck for poseurs!!!!” True, as is your four-door 4×4 pickup that you drive to work every day, rarely putting anything in the bed and rarely towing a trailer. I know you can, but you don’t. How is the Cybertruck any different? Towing isn’t an EV pickup’s forte, we already know that from the real-world testing that car magazines have been doing for years on the Lightning and Cybertruck. But you can put small loads into the back of a Cybertruck, you really can. Most users don’t use a pickup for their contracting business, they just need to haul some mulch, a motorcycle, or some 2x4s. It isn’t a “fake pickup”, it has an exterior hauling area, which is literally the definition of a pickup truck. Someone recently commented that the Subaru Brat isn’t a pickup. It’s the same thing as a Cybertruck, a Subaru Brat really is a “pickup”, it has an exterior hauling area. It’s just not a white Ford F-250 with a pipe rack on top, which is what most people think of when they think of a pickup truck.
I’m not going to sway anyone toward EVs, the Cybertruck, or a Subaru Brat as being a pickup. We’ve all had decades to lock in our opinions and it’s impossible to change anyone’s mind, as the last decade or so of politics has shown us. You either like EVs or you don’t, it’s that simple. Just know that they were never meant to be all things to all people at all times. You commute with a four-door 4×4 pickup but you don’t have to, you could drive a small car and then use your truck when you need a truck. That’s what an EV is, they aren’t meant to do everything as a single vehicle for every human in every climate on the planet. Plus, Teslas are made in America, I thought that would cut them some slack, but even that doesn’t seem to matter. For the record, I’ve never owned one and probably never will, but I like that they’re an option. Of course, at these prices, it’s not an option for most people anyway. Speaking of price, a “Future Collectible” Cybertruck comes in three configurations: a rear-wheel drive model for $61,000, an AWD model for $80,000, and a “Cyberbeast” AWD truck for $100,000.
The technology is amazing on the Cybertruck, it’s more than just a crazy stainless steel exterior. It’s like asking a Hank Williams Jr. fan to watch a video of Megadeath to ask anyone who already hates the Cybertruck to watch a video touting its features. But for those of you who are interested, this is a great review by Hagerty here on YouTube. The interior looks sparse, angular, and flat like the exterior, and the frunk can most likely hold enough luggage for a weekend trip anywhere along the extensive Tesla Supercharger network. North Dakota and Montana are iffy, but otherwise, you won’t have trouble finding a charger. There are no “engine” photos, of course, but this one would have a 340-mile range, give or take. What are your thoughts on the Cybertruck, is it a future classic?

Hey Scotty – I like your out-of-the-box thinking here. Will we see “Classic Tesla” re-powering these with fission reactors or whatever comes next? Part of me hopes not, but it could happen. Maybe Tesla will do it themselves like Ferrari and other sellers-to-the-rich-and-famous — restoring cars they sold decades ago. I am not impressed with the styling, but it certainly is unique. I recall when the Cadillac CTS came out, someone said GM saved money by only giving their stylists rulers to draw with, and that seems to apply here as well. You’re already a Barnfinds Icon. Maybe in time you’ll be called a prophet as well!

I reserved comment until actually seeing one on the road. Now I have and it didn’t change my original knee-jerk reactionary first thought…that has to be the ugliest vehicle of all time. Honestly I’ve seen kids make better looking soap box derby cars out of cardboard boxes.

I live about 20 miles north of their Fremont factory and saw one the day they were released for sale to the public, but none since. They are HUGE, about the overall size of a long bed 4 door F250 4×4. The smart people are doing what this guy is doing, flip it before the market becomes saturated. Tesla is going to pump out as many of these as they can make, eventually fulfilling whatever “pent up” demand exists. It’s not a serious truck, it’s something you drive so people will look at you. If production was limited to a few hundred units a year like most of the European super car manufacturers do I could see it reach collector car status, but that’s not going to happen. If this guy gets his price, or close to it, he’s going to laugh all the way to the bank. The smart money is doing exactly what this seller is doing.

No uglier than a new Silverado IMO. GM has hit an all-time low in LT styling and Ford is not much better. I’d restore a 12th gen (09-14) F-150 ANY day over owning a late GM or Ford.

Pipe on top of a F-250? Nope, hadn’t come to my mind as to what a pickup is. I bought a Toyota 1-TON in 1986 with an 8ft bed and I wish I still had it. It had what I needed; a 4-cylinder, 5-speed, AC ride that I could haul a lawnmower or incidentals. No frills but one heck of a truck. Now it’s a Dodge Ram 1500. But a Cybertruck? Not in this lifetime. Gas or diesel. And a 12-volt battery, thank you.
I am not a fan, but I am not a fan of any new truck right now. I noticed Toyota has grill in lieu of a front bumper. Now that we are out of vertical space on the front of a truck for grill, I guess we can have the grill wrap onto the hoof like a 70’s Olds. At least these have no grill, which is refreshing, even if the angular style is a bit weird.
Will it haul 3/4″ plywood? Honestly, it looks like it’s MADE out of 3/4 plywood.
As charmless as the exterior is, the interior is even less interesting.
Finally, with it’s over-tinted windows, the rich incel guy trying to impress the chicks with this garden shed on wheels can’t even be seen.

If this were a size smaller than the Model 3 it would make a lot more sense than it does being ridicuhuge.
It is wrapped because the stainless bodies actually corrode if left in the open. Yes, I know it is stainless and in theory , but there is plenty of press out there about this problem –

In terms of being a collector car I don’t see it. the timer on the battery starts the minute it’s put together.15 years from now this car won’t go 5 Miles on a charge and will need a $50000 battery replacement. All EVs are disposable
I have 280.000mls on my S, and the battery repair cost @250.000mls was 4500. It is again @ 96%. So better not talk about something you have no connection to or experience about.
How come there are many articles written, many from reputable sources such as Road&Track or Consumer’s Report that say battery replacement cost on average $10,000 to 15,000 but on some certain cars it far more than that ? ( I think on a chevy Bolt it is more like 20,000 )

Beginning int he 70’s something (the initiation of computers?) has caused a change that is discomforting. A $100,000.00 vehicle that looks like this, with so many inherent flaws, shouldn’t be able to find a buyer. Yet it does. My mind is blown.

And DD, you lucked out. Either that or you’re making it up. I’ve read too many horror stories of the cost of battery replacement on electric vehicles. Battery replacement costs more than a new car, so many are going to end up in junkyards real soon.
There are company’s now who refurbish old batteries, but let’s see how long they last and how expensive they are. Sure, the price will come down eventually, but right now it’s not worth it.
Get rid of that ugly eyesore. It’s not a true barnfind, and nobody can afford it.
Is the purpose of the flat, angular panels intended to be easy, cheap replaceability? That’s the only logic I could imagine, because sure as Jesus wears sandals, it ain’t aesthetics.

They explain the exterior body panels are 300 series SS and structural. They can be up to 1.8mm thick in places.

Great write up Scotty. Sooner or later, all new vehicles will be electric. They’re not being forced on us, it’s called the free market. Helped by government regulations? Sure. It’s called progress. Otherwise we would all still be riding horses. Battery technology will improve to the point where replacement won’t be so expensive. Have you priced the cost of an engine replacement for an ICE vehicle? The only problem I have with Tesla, is Elon Musk. What a douche. I would never buy a car from him, but fortunately there are plenty of alternatives. Being retired though I’ll never buy new again. Oh and the Cybertruck is weird.
They should install a “free” charger station next to your house. Thst way, you could gauge the progress of the “free market” with the govt. intervention of my tax dollars.
Don’t forget about the $20+ billion worth of your tax dollars a year that the U.S. government pays in “subsidies” to oil and gas companies, Big C. That’s several times what is paid for EV-related vehicles, charging stations, etc.

With that grafitti on back, if you park this in some neighborhoods, some “artists” might be tempted to scribble their own trademarks & comments on the sides of this vehicle. Or worse, might think it’s abandoned – & try to take it for a ride.

I placed a deposit on a Hummer EV SUV in April 2020 ,and finally received it in December (Canada was over a year behind the U.S. ).I absolutely love it ,but make no mistake,I bought it IN SPITE of it being electric ,not BECAUSE of it.I just couldn’t turn down the Quad T tops (Definitely a 70’s Trans Am and Vette guy ) ,the 850 HP ,and the unmistakable style !
Speaking of style ,the top Cybertruck is apparently faster than my Hummer.
It would have to be faster than the speed of light to outrun that kind of UGLY !

I’ve seen 2 on the road in the last week. One when I was returning from BikeWeek in Daytona. The other was on RT 93 between Kingman, AZ and Las Vegas. The 2nd one passed me (I was on a bike) and I tried to catch up and follow it. I got up to 90 and he was still pulling away from me. I will say they are huge. Not many charging stations out in the desert in NW AZ so I was wondering how far he’d get doing around 100 mph.
At 100 mph its range is at beast one third of what it is at normal speeds

Hey now.. My first vehicle was a 1980 Subaru Brat. Paid $1500 for it with 32K miles on the clock. I use it as a pickup, by ripping out those rear seats, and it hauled picnic tables, cow manure, mulch and even hauled an Olds 455 with the transmission still attached to a buddy’s house. It was the ultimate fun haver for a teenager back in the day, and the girls loved it too. It outclimbed any full size pickup including those F- whatevers. I used to make them mad because I could climb the hills backwards without putting it in 4WD. Ahh the good old days. Now I have a 7 year old Silverado that sits at the transmission shop…..

Mmmmm… I don’t think so… there appear to be at least two, and possibly more groups here… the first just think the thing is ugly, no matter what its propulsion tech is. I’ll put myself in the category. The second are people that just simply dislike EV tech… and this is where it breaks into splinters… politics, Elon’s politics, anti green… you get the idea…
These look like a non-GM attempt at a retro-remake attempt of the Pontiac Aztek, just missing the rear-door tent that came with the original Azteks. I remember when they first rolled it out a few years ago, and showed off the bullet-proof glass that immediately SHATTERED when someone tapped it with a champagne bottle! In my opinion the 100% 0% fossil fuel powered U.S. cars by 2032 which I refer to as COAL BURNING cars idea isn’t feasible much less possible, and runs the risk of going the way of the “Segway”, which was predicted would take the world, and transportation itself and be even bigger than the internet. Unfortunately, the inventer of the thing died on one when he plunged into a river on it. And like EVs, it was monstrously expensive, took hours to re-charge, and went completely out of production after only selling less than only a million or so units across the entire run of the thing, around 20 years. Highly underwhelming, yet massively over-priced, using slave labor in some cases and unethical mining techniques in other countries, not to mention difficult to charge using today’s lacking infrastructure, which is largely produced using fossil fuels though we are making strides in wind and solar energies. But we’re still at a place where there’s simply not enough electricity to go around at least not yet anyways, especially not using fossil fuels to generate it.
Every “ugliest car ever” list I’ve seen has always had the Pontiac Aztec on top. I think that’s about to change.

I have three 60-year-old Detroit-built cars that run perfectly. I drive the three of them almost every day, they will outlast me. Now that’s environmental conservation, making a car last 60-70 years without replacing it. Will this “truck” be around 60 years from now?
Rex, you are driving cars built by a car company. At least the Edsel was built out of 30-40-years of automotive design and manufacturing experience, and is robust and reliable for it.
Teslas are cars being built by a tech company, as though it were a desktop computer case.

Well, I’ve got a ’06 Silverado and an ’08 Trailblazer that are now just so much landfill because their frames have turned to swiss cheese… ya, the Tesla is ugly, but will it really do that much worse?…
My son found the Ford Mach E to be impractical due to the lack of charging stations and poor cold weather conditions up in New Hampshire.. After only one year he took a beating on the trade in value for a new gas Chevy pickup.. No one in the private sector would buy it.

Between the ‘Total Recall’ background-extra-scenery-look of the thing, the tissue-paper control arms, $250 wiper blades, and the lowest-content stainless steel that rusts faster than a Fiat 126, it is rife with unfortunate design and build choices entirely on-brand for the second owner of Tesla.
And the Model S looks like a Ferrari compared to this Tinkertoy.
Edsel owners are forever grateful that this has overtaken them by a long shot as the UGLIEST vehicle ever committed to 4 wheels. Pity any pedestrian or small vehicle who gets hit by one of these monstrosities as they will not survive.It serves no useful purpose than to inflate the ego’s of those foolish enough to buy one.
No more ugly than a Pontiac Aztek. Vehicle design is a total joke today, but I guess at my age, pushing 70, I am still living in the 70s when cars were styled by real designers, not some douche bag. My college roommate is a cop in Bal Harbour, FL and saw one yesterday. He snapped a photo and text it to me. He wrote INTERSTING. Yes it is. Times change and yes, I hate change and am very resistant to any high tech crap, but this is the future. At first glance, it reminds me of the robot in the great 1951 movie, “The Day The Earth Stood Still.”

Jay Leno’s Garage has a really good episode on the Cybertruck. Whether you like it or don’t like it, at least it’s a break from the “boring modern cars” that everyone on here complains so bitterly about day after day, year after year. It sort of reminds me of the Delorean when it came out (not sure how old most of you are or if you remember that) but people either loved or hated the Delorean (and generally hated it). Now it’s a classic (okay yes some people still hate the Delorean and a lot of it’s love comes from 80’s “Back to the Future” nostalgia), but my point is even the Delorean, the Edsel, and (gasp!) even the Aztek are collector cars (okay the Aztek is still in the embryonic stage of collectible & “Mad Men” helped that a lot). The Cybertruck is definitely not for everyone (and looks like not for almost anyone here!), but I do like that it pushes the envelope of car/truck design. That’s more than we can say for a lot of the boring lumps rolling around on the streets these days. Have a great holiday weekend everyone!
??… Ugh… Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway vehicle is 72 years old and still very much alive… The tale you repeated is one of those that floats around in the ether, but like many of these things, (and I’ll be kind here) are not quite accurate… Your story is based on this: A self made millionaire named Jimi Heselden who bought the parent company of Segway in 2009 is the one who died… It happened in 2010… Jimi was 62…
he was alone, riding the “all terrain” version of the Segway, obviously had a bad moment, and drove it off a cliff into a river… the exact cause of the accident was never determined, but the reliability of the vehicle was never questioned… and by the way, although the Segway PT ended its production run (in a large way due to a increasingly complicated regulatory environment) in 2020 after 140,000 units sold, and the rights being bought by the Chinese company Ninebot, the Segway company is still very much in business… doing other things…
So… what you are saying here is that the guy who owned the Segway company drove a Segway off a cliff and died… not the guy who designed the Segway… but you can probably understand the reason for the confusion… Right? Besides, it really doesn’t change the irony of the situation.
About the Segway…
A small thing like the Segway if it had 3 or 4 wheel would work better,
would be much safer and its battery range would be greater because it would use less of the battery power to fight being out of balance about a thousand times per second, which serves no purpose, other than being impressive.
the fact the Segway keeps the balance for you is like a circus act, it serves no purpose other than impress people.
Having only 2 wheels ; Does it go faster? does it go further? can it carry a heavier load? does it free your hand more? can it go over obstacle better than a 3 or 4 identical vehicle?

At least the wheels aren’t triangular! If not for the wheels, the entire car could be designed by using nothing but a ruler. But the wheels would also require a beam compass to draw in the circles.
This is strange but in Knoxville where I live, I have seen one everyday at different times of the day, just driving around! Is my local Tesla place paying an employee to just drive it around for people to think there are people buying them???
