The French Canadian: 1980 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you didn’t already have the blues, this 1980 Chevy Camaro Z28 will certainly give it to you. The blue on blue on blue styling is incredibly representative of the era, and the seller even tossed in a blue tarp in case you weren’t feeling it enough. Said to be equipped with a numbers matching 350 V8 and a 4-speed stick, this Z28, found here on craigslist near Bend, Oregon, could be one fun ride, just don’t forget your mullet. At $6,000, this running and driving Camaro is screaming for its rubber to be burned.

Fun fact: the Camaro name was born out of a spelling mistake in a French-English dictionary from the 1930s. GM executives stumbled across the unknown word, which equated to something close to comrade, and decided to use it on their new pony car. Well, I could see myself and few comrades cruising the strip and blasting Van Halen all night in this bad boy, but it appears I wouldn’t have been the first. The interior certainly needs some refurbishment, which makes me question the sellers claims that this only has 62,000 original miles on it. The aftermarket CD player would also be much better off as a tape deck.

The seller posted a few shots of the engine, including inside of it. It appears to be in great shape, and they state it runs clean and “WILL STILL SQUALL 3RD GEAR.” Do you think it was a rebuild or is it cleaned up? They mentioned they’ve used some chrome dress up parts and an aftermarket carb, which is apparent, but all original pieces are included in the sale to return the car to stock condition. In 1980 this 350 V8 would put out 190 horse, certainly enough to have fun with, right? One thing to note, this was a car built for the Canadian market, so the 140 on the speedo is in kilometers, while the MPH only goes up to 85.  With that in mind, are you ready to rock?

If it started life in Canada, la rouille (rust, in French) could be a concern.

I would have certainly wanted some kind of mileage documentation. My ’81 Z has 115K miles and has been in dry storage since 2005 and looks better than this Z.

Driven hard…and looks it. Not well taken care of. My KIA makes over 160 hp. Still, I really like the style of the car as I had a friend with a souled up one too. I believe the seller in stating it will “squalk” (auto correct), up into third….of course with Eric Claptons “cocaine” blasting. Sum fun!

If Papa Smurf had a Z28, this would be his color.

I don’t know what is up with that colour. Originally it would have been that medium blue you see on the door panels. What a mess.

Doubt if I could get that thing past a smog check station without being laughed at. Other than that it ain’t all that bad,. A black interior would have gone a long way in the looks department.
