Going On Safari: 1977 Pontiac LeMans Safari Wagon

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

What is a 1977 Pontiac LeMans station wagon worth? Well, with 3 days remaining in the auction, 28 bidders have bid this fine example up to $5,500. The Safari station wagon is located in Hauppauge, New York and only has 84,697 miles. For more information, the ad can be seen here on eBay.

I can remember growing up in the 1970’s and 1980’s and those vinyl seats would get really hot during the summer months in Louisiana. The blue interior on this well preserved example looks very nice. The car is said to start and run well but the air conditioning is not working.  The tires on all four corners have been replaced as well as recent service for the front brakes.

The engine is a L78 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 which delivered 180 horsepower in 1977 and was also used as the base engine in the Pontiac Trans Am. The car delivers power through a column shifted automatic transmission all the way through to a 2:56 to 1 rear end. The exterior shows some dings and a dent from a fallen tree branch. The seller bought the wagon from an elderly owner and was wise to share the build sheet that was still intact in the car.

With Rally II wheels, the car looks sporty and would be a fun car to haul parts or take the family out in. The seller did a good job with a number of pictures showing the condition of the interior and exterior of the car. So who is ready to go on a Safari?

The only thing I would do, if I could find the parts, is add a Shaker hood from a CanAm or police package. That and a good exhaust for the 400 would bring out its inner T/A.

I think I would change the rear gears too.

No, those gears make it a perfect highway cruiser, is what it was intended for.

No, I would leave it stock. Adding the hood scoop would make it look low rent.

Only Pontiac could make a station wagon look good . To bad they couldn’t do the same with mini vans .

Did you ever see, “Get Shorty”? It’s the Cadillac of minivans!

I think it was the Olds Silhouette that was “the Cadillac of minivans,” not the Pontiac Trans Sport. I’ll agree that that generation of GM vans was ugly, but the next gen Pontiac Montana actually looked good.

I had this wagon’s exact twin, but without air. Same colours, drivetrain, etc.. I added Detroit Speed front springs, hollow 1.25″ front sway bar, performance shocks , and … that was it. Reliable, comfortable, shockingly good handling for its size, enough grunt to move along nicely, and cavernous cargo space with the back seat folded down. Funniest part: that car received more attention and compliments than any of the GTO’s or Firebirds I ever owned. I miss that wagon but life goes on. Everyone is different, but I bet the final buyer of this wag is going to love it.

C, the Vans in Get Shorty were the Oldsmobile variety of the same car.
Pontiac Vans, also attractive were called Montanas with upscale interiors and the normal GM BS. I can’t remember the name of the Oldsmobile version. The most attractive I think were the Chevrolet versions. All the same body, differentials in trims and some engine options. As usual GM stupidity. I can say that. I am a second generation GM Owner who had the sense to buy some thing else and then get in the Old Car Hobby.

Andrew, the Pontiac version was called the Trans Sport, before the Montana was introduced.

The Oldsmobile was the Silhouette like this one.

Replace those gears with something not suitable for interstellar travel. 2.56 gears…yeesh.

Pontiacs always looked better, ran better when equipped w a Pontiac motor, what killed Pontiac was everyone expected more from them, and those lousy Buick V/6s and Chevy 305s killed it, and who can forget the Oldsmobile powered Trans Ams with the anchor 403

We had a new 77 LeMans Safari in buckskin, this one has a nicer interior, ours didn’t have carpet on the rear floor or the split bench. That spare tire well is the first place to look for rust.

    Love it. Great pictures, too.
Change nothing, freshen fluids, belts, hoses and enjoy this rare, well cared for gem.

I just watched Smokey And The Bandit again.

I never realized how many 1977 Pontiac LeMans police cars they crashed.
