Golden Project: 1971 Porsche 911

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you’re in the market for a long hood 911 project, then may we suggest this one? It has been off the road since 1979 but appears to be very complete and original. There are a few problems areas that are going to need to be addressed, but this looks like a good place to start. It’s also listed here on eBay with no reserve so it should go for market value or less. Better hurry though because the auction is ending soon!

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the gold metallic color sprayed on this 911 is eye-catching. Personally, I love it! Unfortunately, this one needs some rust repair so you probably won’t be able to salvage the paint. According to the seller, the bottoms of the doors, rockers, and lower fenders are suffering from the nasty stuff. It doesn’t look bad in the photos, so some close-ups may be in order.

The underside looks a lot better than many of the 911 projects that we have featured over the years. Of course, there could be more corrosion hiding beneath that undercoating, but we are hoping the suspension mounts are nice and solid. Porsche didn’t start galvanizing their bodies until ’76 so it can be a challenge to find a truly rust-free car that hasn’t already been restored.

Oh wait, there’s some rust! Look at the big gaping hole near the bottom of the door jam. The overspray on the striker plate is a clue that this car may have suffered a respray. That means there could be even more surprises hiding under the surface. I’m not going to write this one off though because it still looks like a better starting point than most.

The interior appears to all be there and it’s actually in decent condition. Just take a look at that dash! I can’t even spot any cracks. The original Blaupunkt radio is still in place and I don’t see any wires hanging out from underneath. This is a good shot that shows the five gauges and ignition key on the left – both 911 trademarks.

Another trademark is the air-cooled flat-six out back. The “T” in the emblem means that this is a base model car. It didn’t have as much power as the E or S, but was still enough to have fun! This engine hasn’t been first up since ’79 so plan on doing some work in here. It does turn over, but the odometer is showing over 100k so you’ll probably still have to crack the case.

This project isn’t going to be cheap and it’s not going to be easy, but there isn’t anything much better than getting behind the wheel of one of the world’s most unique and iconic sports cars! The option list was short on this one, but the color does make it stand out. What do you think – is this one you’d like to have in your workshop?

I wouldn’t pay that for this car. I think the rust problems are worse than it appears.

Man, those are good looking cars! Color, similar to Porsche “Bahama Yellow”.
