Garage Find! 1961 Porsche 356B 1600 Cabriolet
It seems like vintage Porsches are coming out of the woodwork lately. We’ve featured several here on Barn Finds in the last couple of months including this other 1961 356 and the 1961 Notchback this car is sharing the garage with. The bidding on that one ended just into six-figures and the way this one is going, it will probably be the same. Found here on eBay with a current bid of $70,200, the car still has a few days to rack up more bidding.
Located in Medford, Oregon, the car has been pulled from storage and cleaned up a bit. It was said to have been stored for about ten years and it appears that the owner had at least one other vintage Porsche in the garage. The seller is upfront stating that there is no documentation with the car. It certainly looks good from a distance, but a closer inspection by a Porsche expert would be warranted to determine the actual value.
Unfortunately, the engine is not numbers-matching. It is, however, period correct and the ad describes some more details as follows: “…a renowned restorer from Oregon went through the entire motor and even counterbalanced the crank…transmission and carbs rebuilt…The owner tells me the motor has less than 10K miles on it but had no documentation to substantiate the claim. The motor is a normal 1600. The motor is very clean as all the tin appears to have been powder coated.”
The seller says the interior needs some work including the seats and carpet. The steering wheel and gauges are said to be original. There is a photo of the back seat area and it doesn’t look too bad.
Overall, this car looks like a pretty decent project. It seems like it will be a good driver and a fix-it-while-you-drive-it project. The car also comes with a hardtop, which is pretty neat. What do you think, is this car worth six-figures?

Medford Oregon would not be high on the list of places I’d expect these two Porsche’s to be found.
It looks like it would make a great driver, hopefully someone will use it such.

Medford has doctors, lawyers and dentists. Lots of nice driving roads, too.
And the witness from “Double Indemnity”
I like the color, Is that original?
This Karman is super cool.. :-0
A lot of money for a Volkswagen.
Even split window ragtop Beetles are going for what this seller is asking. Granted, they are fully restored, and the resto rods with 2.0 liter engines can beat an old Porsche off the line.
Just for my education – if there is no documentation with the car, how does the seller know the engine is not numbers matching ?
