Great Condition: 1979 GMC Caballero

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Everyone knows that most GMC products are Chevrolets with different grilles. I believe that GMC is currently trying to move their products a little more upmarket from a Chevrolet though. In 1979, GMC didn’t even bother to change the grille to include the famous “GMC” in the center on this model. If you look closely, GMC is in small letters on the driver’s side lower grille. This is not a Chevrolet El Camino, but it is a 1979 GMC Caballero for sale here on Craigslist in Greenville, North Carolina.

If you buy this one, you will probably be constantly correcting people that it is not an El Camino, so you will have to point to the tailgate to show them the GMC tag. Oh well, hope that won’t bother you. This is a very nice Caballero. Everything on the truck works. The paint is a beautiful two-tone in Beige and Camel Tan, called the Laredo Two-Tone paint, much like the El Camino’s Conquista. There is no rust anywhere on the vehicle. It has color keyed rally wheels, dual sports mirrors, and chrome cargo rails.

The interior features a split bench seat with center fold-down armrest in Camel vinyl with knit cloth in the seating areas. This GMC has power windows, power door locks, automatic transmission, and air conditioning, all working properly. Everything appears to be in great condition.

Unfortunately, there are no pictures of the engine or any indication as to how many miles are on this Caballero. I’m guessing it can’t be too high. The engine is a 305 cubic inch V-8 with 4 barrel carburetor. It runs and drives great. The seller is asking $8,500. Are you looking for an El Camino or its GMC counterpart, the Caballero? This may be the one just for you.

I have a soft spot for these, and I really don’t know why, other than my grandfather had a ’79 “Royal Knight” in white with a dark blue interior. It had an SS badge on the dash, a 305, auto, tilt, cruise, factory 7 Track and an aftermarket pop-up sunroof. Oddly, it had the standard “sweep” style speedometer. I believe that to be the standard cluster for ’78 to ‘8x? I downloaded the dark interior shot, completed edit of it (brightness, angle), and I can see this car has delay wipers, cruise control and the optional gauges. I can’t see if it has a big clock or the tachometer in the very right pod however. Very nice ride.

Here’s the edited picture. And, it was an 8 track, not a 7 track . Way too late here.

GMCs were traditionally upmarket from their Chebbie equivalents. Go back 60+ years and see what engines sat under a Jimmy hood and check out the higher trim spec.

Obviously someone found this particular pick-em-up attractive as the listing disappeared, as Moparman noted…

Must be a good market for Elco’s and Cab’s as I had my sights on a ’72 SS clone yesterday, was corresponding with the seller and suddenly it was listed “sold”. If anyone has their heart set on one like this, my ’83 is comparable and I’ll be listing it on BF when the weather warms up.

See? I was gonna give this 2 days & it would be gone! I’m obviously too late! A sweet `79, and someone is getting a really great Cabollero.

I always wished GM had distinguished these from the Chevy version a bit more; all those other G-body front clips and interiors to choose from, and they just swapped badges and called it a day.
