Dirt Cheap 1972 Pontiac LeMans Project

It’s been awhile since we’ve brought you a vehicle from our vast “dirt cheap” department here at Barn Finds. This 1972 Pontiac LeMans is for sale here on craigslist and is located in St. Louis, Missouri. It’s said to be a running project. When I saw the asking price of $800, I was sure it would be a completely wasted four-door sedan. But as it turns out, it’s a completely wasted two-door hardtop instead.

1972 Pontiac LeMans

These super-rough project cars aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but they always catch my eye. To me, the weathered jalopy is the very essence of the old car hobby. New and perfect cars can be found anywhere and everywhere. But a car like this – it has a story to tell.

Every scratch, every dent, every missing piece of trim is evidence of what happened to it. A rolling saga on wheels.

If this quarter panel is any good indication of what’s going on with the body on this car, it doesn’t look too bad. Rusty, but do-able.

Well, wait a minute.  Maybe not so fast.  The passenger quarter panel wants to talk. When it’s your turn to speak, you can tell it all about your relationship with your credit card, and aftermarket parts suppliers. You’re gonna wanna stay in touch.

But the relationship is worth the effort. This engine was made back when a Pontiac was still a Pontiac. We can also see that unlike so many other budget project cars, no one has hacked off the factory A/C. That’ll come in handy several summers from now.

This car is and was, blue all over. I’d sure like to know more about the condition of the rest of the interior. Chances are, this door panel is shown because it’s the only nice-looking part inside the car. They make all this stuff new, even in this color, but you’d better call customer service and ask if they’ll raise the limit on your credit card. It’s the American thing to do. Build a cool muscle car your way, preserve history, improve your credit score, because it needs all the metal. I think at $800, there is a good chance this car may sell before this article is published. But I’ve been wrong about that kind of stuff before. Parts car? GTO clone? Or not worth fooling with at all? What do you think?

I would love a 72 Lemans, just not that one, looks to far gone..
A luxury Lemans with a 400/ 4speed would be awesome!

He doesn’t want anyone wasting his time asking him questions! I love buying things that way. I wouldn’t give him a penny.

He must think that for $800 you can just buy the car and get all the answers your heart desires.

Seems fair enough to me. Where else can you find a mostly complete, running, GM, muscle car era, A body? Very good parts car.

Ya Knowww!!! Give him the asking price.. take the car home.. strip it for parts.. sell them on EBay and make twice the investment back.. That engine alone is worth it..
    IMHO

I’ve messaged the guy who owns this several times over the past couple weeks and he never replies…it’s been on Craigslist for about 3 weeks and he’s lowered the price on it several times. Also when it was first listed it had the front fenders on it… But, if I were to get it I would go with the “ratty” look and just fix what needs to be fixed.

to me it looks like the carb is not connected to the manifold. Like it’s just “sitting there” I’d be surprised if it would fit that mill.

Huh ?,,,,,,,,,,, fuel line is connected, throttle linkage is connected . Pretty standard run of the mill Rochester 2GC for most of G.M. back then.

That’s a Rochester “2GC” carb (2-barrel with thermostatic choke) … so that more than likely makes it a 350 CID engine.

Just looking at glass and door regulators…..does it have disk brakes ? That’s another $300 for a pair of them….will bolt on all the way down to 1967.

My guess is that the lack of a power booster indicates that it probably has drum brakes, I have one almost like it (1968 convertible) 350 engine, Drum brakes, no power assist, 14 inch wheels, You have to pull the steering wheel off to stop the damn thing, I have owned it since 1974, only vehicle I own that’s NOT for sale.

Looks like he ripped the front fenders off in frustration. No reason for the ends of the nose/outer headlight cap to be torn like that. What a d’bag. Hope someone wrestles this away from him for parts.

Funny you mentioned the AC compressor being present…I’m constantly amazed at how many nice Pontiacs for sale out there are sans compressor…are they trying to save weight, or are they into punishment!?!

    Lucerne Blue!

Restore it, say keep the chrome but graft in the T-41 fender vents (a combo that should have been offered), and give it a 72 455 HO with 12 bolt rear, and WW5ish suspension upgrades.
