Dirty French Project: 1968 Citroen 2CV
We featured a clean appearing 1975 Citroen 2CV here back in November, you’ll to look at as a reference. “Clean” is not a term that comes to mind when you see this 1968 2CV. Listed here on craigslist in Chicago, Illinois, this 1968 Citroen 2CV is priced at $1,500 and is… well… dirty.
The seller does not state the condition of the engine or any of the other mechanical or electrical systems. The term “toast” might come to mind, we just don’t know?
The seller, Al, says he was offered $2,500 for the car “as-is” with a title. The story goes that the previous owner couldn’t find the title, so for $1,500 you get the car without a title.
The car looks pretty complete even with the bashing that has occurred. Remember, these were built to be simple and durable.
Al would like to sell this unit ASAP. There is an image of a Chicago window decal on the windshield dated 1972, so it might have some interesting history. Is this the last year this 2CV was running around the Windy City? At that point we are sure it was still a “clean” looking ’68 Citroen 2CV. Al states that this car is well worth the price for a rough rare restoreable, or parts car. What are your thoughts? Is there any value here without the title?

Looks like someone punched it in the nose. I got news for ya’, if they were offered $2500 for it, they should have fixed the title thing, and run like the dickens to get it. Regardless, these are pretty rare over here, and would make a great car to drive. There’s like a billion of these overseas, so parts shouldn’t be a problem. Always liked the 2CV. It is just so odd, AND makes sense.
A good scrubdown and the owner might get his asking price.

After looking at these pictures a couple of times, I just realized it has a VW Beetle rear bumper on the front of it. Well, I guess what ever works.
I’m trying to imagine restoring the electrics on a French car. Even dirty it looks sort of right.Wouldn’t have been that hard to at least turn a hose on it. Flood car?
Not rare at all, there are plenty in USA, you just don’t see ’em as they’re too slow to drive in fast moving traffic.
We would love this winter project.
This is my car, and the photos are from when I pulled it before cleaning it off. The motor is not locked up, abs I havn’t had the time, space, or patience to deal with it.
I took fresh photos yesterday.
I got it from the second owner, it was her first car, until she said the brakes went out. She said that she had the title but then failed to find it. That was a little over a year ago, and I could use some Christmas cash.

The guy who designed this thing should be sent to prison. The easiest way to restore this car to its best appearance would be to bring in a backhoe, dig a ten-foot deep hole, bury it, then cover it up before property values crash any louder.
Without knowing the chassis number, I can’t tell for sure, but I suspect it’s not a 1968 if it has a MPH speedometer. It’s got none of the 1968 US DOT requirements like side marker lights, seat belts, headrests, etc. If it’s got a KPH speedo, then it might be a privately imported European version, and it would not have the DOT items.
