Diesel Time Capsule: 1990 Chevrolet Silverado
UPDATE – We got word from the seller of this time capsule pickup that it didn’t find a buyer, so they’ve relisted it. We’ve updated the link to the new auction below. Hopefully, it finds a good home this time around!
FROM 12/8/2021 – We’ve seen a lot of vehicles here that look like they just rolled out of the showroom but are decades old. Most of them seem to be cars but this 1990 Chevrolet Silverado C1500 diesel pickup qualifies and then some. The seller has this beautiful, original survivor truck listed here on eBay in Cape Coral, Florida, the bids are at $8,100, and the reserve isn’t met yet.
This truck has had just one owner since it was new according to the seller, and it only has 46,000 miles on it – pretty incredible. They also say that since it’s a diesel, they got about 24 mpg on a recent road trip. This is a rear-wheel-drive truck so that helps but 24 mpg with that huge amount of hauling capacity in the long-bed is great in my world.
The fourth-generation Chevrolet C-series two-wheel-drive pickup was made along with the K-series 4WD trucks for model years 1988 through 2002 in various cab configurations and payloads. The C1500 is a half-ton, the 2500 is a 3/4-ton, and the 3500 is a one-ton truck. They came in regular cab, extended cab, and crew cab versions. My brother had a nice regular cab 2WD fourth-gen Chevy C1500 a few years ago and it was a nice truck, especially inside.
There are no underside photos but everything else basically looks like new so I’m guessing that it’s clean underneath. Look at the beautiful condition of the truck bed! The interior is downright luxurious for a hard-working truck. The seats look clean and perfect front and back and the seller says that it’s never been smoked in, never had food in it, and never been abused as far as hauling heavy loads. Yes, the AC works. Hagerty is at $14,300 for a #2 excellent condition truck.
The engine looks cleaner than most operating rooms do in 2021 and it’s Chevy’s 379 cubic-inch diesel V8 with around 140 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. The seller says that it runs like a top and they have provided four YouTube videos in the eBay description so check those out. Any thoughts on this jewel of a truck?

Outstanding truck, and will be a great buy for the right someone! I personally despise those aluminum running boards; on this truck they accentuate the length making it look longer than it already is. I understand that there are some who need them, but they are a pet peeve of mine. GLWTA!! :-)
Nice truck, it’s been featured on here twice; July and November.
When trucks were actually trucks with 8′ beds and an extended cab. I love this thing.. makes my 2500 extended cab look plebeian in comparison. If I were in the market, it would be high on my list to look at.
Id like to know the rearend gear , transmission cooler / tow pkg , and government locker in rear or open differential ?
All on the sticker which is in the eBay ad.
Mama Mia, dat’s a one clean truck.( wait, is that derogatory towards Italians?) I think, this was as nice as it was ever going to get in pickups in 1990. Kind of the “updated” squarebody. This type of truck was to evolve into the “universal ” vehicle for the masses, even though, that was still years away in 4 door versions, this truck then could do it all, in style. GM, I felt, led the way in cushy pickups. People loved them, as shown, and probably took better care of the trucks than themselves. Diesel is a hit or miss( no pun intended) some had great luck, others dismal, depending greatly on their location. They didn’t like the cold, obviously, something this truck was never subjected to. This could easily be the last truck you would ever need to buy.
Second time is a charm I guess his add claims Mecum auction offered to put it in their inventory with a $35k reserve my only guess is the seller thinks they can get more than the $35k or they like posting on Evil bay
Awesome looking Chevy truck. I’ve never seen one with a Diesel engine. Which engine is this? Throughout the 80s, they were offered with the 6.2 litre Diesel engine. By the 90s, the engine had grown to 6.5 litres, some were turbocharged. Which engine powers this truck?
The 6.2L was offered through 1993. The 6.5L Turbo came out in 1992 and was offered in 1994 as a Turbo or non-Turbo. That’s according to my online repair info.
I worked in a GMC dealer when these were new and I had to do a waranty replacement of a 6.5L Turbo in a low mileage 1992 logger owned truck so I remember them well.
Towing capacity?
This is a hell of a deal for this generation of truck.
Before my wife’s passing, this is the type of pickup that invariably would be in the hospital parking garage causing a tie-up because it took up half the right of way.
Now that’s one LOOOOOONG truck!
Auction update: bidding has ended at $19,400 and no sale!
They are big and temperamental in cold weather. I had 2 diesel GM vehicles and both had fuel injector issues due to winter fuel blend. One other thing to realize is that is one long truck. I have a similar F150 and it won’t fit in a 22′ garage, so plan accordingly.
For its age, it’s a good looking truck and should give the right person a long time vehicle.
Ok seller if you’re reading this the eBay market has spoken and you’re last high bid is what that market thinks its worth. ebay is NOT the best place to sell this truck as per your add listing sell it at Mecum or take the evil bay offer and run
Truck is very nice. The problem is long bed, not 4-wheel drive and it’s a GM Diesel.
I never understood the point of a half ton diesel truck. To each their own I guess.
My only complaint with the truck is the 6.2 litre Diesel engine. For a truck like this, I’d prefer either a 6.5 litre Turbo Diesel engine, or a 6.6 litre Duramax Diesel.
I had an 89 4×4, 5.7l with a 5 speed. It was fun but a lemon. This one is really nice except 2wd and I don’t trust ant GM diesel. Mine was $16k brand new. I would not pay more than that since I’d have to replace the motor anyway.
Second auction update: this one ended with no sale at $18,560.
