Dealer Edition: 1983 Mustang Dominator GT
We are all familiar with the Mustang GT but did you know that certain dealers created special packages for the Mustang? This example is the Mustang Dominator GT created and sold through Summit Ford in Lee Summit, Missouri. This special dealer edition package was offered from 1982 to 1991. This car is located in Moreno Valley, California and is offered for auction here on eBay. With 4 days remaining in the auction, the Mustang has been bid to $5,800.
The Dominator package included a set of long tube headers, Dominator decals and a 140 mph speedometer. The seller states that it also included a special hood scoop, Motorcraft ignition, 3:08 rear gears and a 5 speed but I think all those were factory options on a Mustang GT. The car is said to run and drive well. There are some minor paint issues but the overall the car is said to be close to original and in excellent shape. The seller bought the car when visiting family in Lee Summit, Missouri and brought it back to California with him. Due to health reasons, he is now selling the car.
I think the Mustang had some of the best seats offered in a pony car from the 1970’s through the 1990’s. The Recaro-like seats were simple and held the driver in place when cornering. Of course, the Mustang Fox body was not known for great handling but it wasn’t that bad. Most enthusiast complained about the solid rear axle. The interior of this example is clean and presents well. There is no visible wear, cracks or tears.
The 5.0 liter (4942 cubic centimeters really makes it a 4.9 liter) or 302 cubic inch V8 engine was rated at 175 horsepower in 1983 in the Mustang GT. This was up from the 157 hp in 1982. The increase in horsepower was due to the addition of a 4 barrel carburetor but exhaust exit was hampered by a restrictive catalytic converter. The car did develop 245 lb ft of torque and with a curb weight of only 3,070 lbs, the Mustang GT was responsive and fun to drive.

Looks like a well-kept Four Eye. I have heard of the Dominator package but can’t say I knew the details. Reading up a bit, I think Bruce has it properly placed as a dealer package which ended up not including much. This one has the later five-spoke “Pony” wheels which are a common change, suggesting it originally had TRX’s. Would be nice to see a Marti Report. Overall this could be a fun car for not a ton of money.
The dominators came in 3 stages. This is a stage one. I have a stage II 83 Dominator GT with 34k miles. Stage I usually had Gears, carb, the 140 speedo, And Smog bypassed from what I’ve seen in 83. Mine as a stage II had D0OE 351w heads, carb, gears(most gears were usually 3.73 gears), 140 speedo. Stage III’s very rare and had a build engine from Anderson motorsports are were low 13-low 12’s in 82/3. A few 82’s had superchargers. The Facebook group has tons of pictures of this car as well as my 83 and a few others.
They had much more than this, Some like my dominator had heads, 3.73 gears, long tubes, dual exhaust, smog bypass, carb work, injection to cool down during multiple pulls, and some had engines built by anderson which made around 300-400 hp in 83…
I had a 84 GT Mustang, great car. Holley carb blew a power valve. Only problem I had with it.
Wow for 120,000 miles it’s in great shape!! Nice to see distributor and carburetor on a Mustang! I had a chance to drive the last year for the carburetor and it was a convertible. Love driving it. This is worth it. It’s a shame the Mustang is on the west Coast. With 3 days to go. It should reach $15,000. Anything less they stole it! 😂 Good luck to the seller and next owner! 🐻🇺🇸

I had the ’82 and ’83 both in the shade a bit darker than this red.
The “1983 Ford Mustang” dealer 24 pg brochure you would order from shows that darker color on the cover, front facing (I kept mine – looking at it now).
I felt both pulled well and were really great cars.
The Holley 4 barrel had the slightest of pause before it yawned open and really made a difference in acceleration. No headers or dual exhaust yet with the ’83 5.0 model.
This GT is nice, a a steal in my mind at $15,000 (more than new).

Nice car though there is a strange rip on the backrest of the drivers seat. There’s no accompanying wear damage around the rip and it’s definitely not a normal wear location.
Just over 2 days left at only $7,161.00. Someone’s gonna get a good deal on this one. Sure is nice.

I had a GT White with red stripes and interior. Sure had fun with that one.
Living in the Kansas City area I remember the Dominator very well. If you wanted a fast Mustang, that was the way to go. Wish I had the money I’d definitely buy this. I’ve been looking for one off and on over the years. Last one I had seen and could afford was back in the late 90’s.
So many of these were aimed at sidewalks, curbs, trees, ditches, pedestrians and such but no one here mentions that !
I guess the memory chooses to eliminate certain driving events …
