Dan Gurney Special: 1967 Mercury Cougar
Mercury Cougars often seem to not get as much appreciation as Ford mustangs or other Ford products. This Cougar is in very nice original condition and features the mid 1967 model year Dan Gurney Package that was simply a chrome dress up package for the Cougar with a window sticker featuring a Cougar and Dan Gurney’s signature. The Gurney package is neat, but do you know what is even better? The price of this Cougar is just $6,000! Find it here on craigslist out of San Jose, California. Thanks Pat L for the submission!
The 289 V8 heart looks clean and you can see some of the dress up package. The Dan Gurney package included a chrome air filter lid, chrome valve covers, chrome radiator cap, and chrome oil dip stick all of which appear to be present. The Gurney package also included turbine wheel covers and white wall tires. Let’s get back to the 289. The 289 is recently rebuilt and in good health. Loaded with such accessories as power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning, this Cougar would be easy to live with. The 289 is backed by a C4 automatic transmission, but the C4 leaks, and has a slipping issue. Many components of this Cougar have been rebuilt or replaced.
Inside of the Dan Gurney special, is a very nice original interior. The dash looks great and is noted that most of the switches and gauges are functional. There are some auxiliary gauges added that are below the dash. There is a radio, but it is currently in the trunk. The seats look very nice as do the door panels. The interior looks to need very little other than a little tinkering to make all the gauges 100% operational and the radio. The exterior still wears the lovely Dan Gurney Turbine hubcaps, and the exterior looks mighty straight. The rockers and quarters looks very nice with no evidence of rust. The only apparent rust is the surface rust on the hood. Even around the vinyl roof looks nice and solid. Someone has spray painted over what we assume to have been surface rust on the hood, the tops of the front fenders, and the trunk area.
This Cougar is a paint job, a few gauges, and a slipping transmission away from being an excellent car. Or it could be left alone and enjoyed for a little while, but a paint job would really bring this Cougar to life. What would you do with this Mercury Cougar?

Its not clear if the AC working or not, so that would have be addressed along with the heater. Fix or replace the tranny, get a radio in there and get it painted. And then enjoy it for it years to come. Nice car, nice price!
Nicely optioned car for a decent price.
I had a ’67 convertible in this color all those many years ago. All it needed was a 4 speed…..always liked the Cougar look more than the Mustang…..and how do you listen to the radio if its in the trunk?
@Woodie Man, did you mean you just had a ’67 convertible in this color or a ’67 Cougar convertible in this color? If so, did you convert a hardtop or did some one else?
Jeez……RD…. No it was OEM ….. Maybe it was a second iteration Cougar…… Rear tail lights changed in what 69? Maybe it was a ’69……now that I think of it probably had the 69 lights…… It’s been 40 years….. And lots of……um…… Driving
1969 was the first year that the factory offered the Cougar as a convertible.
I confess I did not know about the racer Dan Gurney, especially of the “firsts” he was responsible for. Wikipedia says “In 1967, after winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans together with A.J. Foyt, he spontaneously sprayed champagne while celebrating on the podium. Apart from starting this tradition, he also was the first to put a simple right-angle extension on the upper trailing edge of the rear wing. This device, called a Gurney flap, increases downforce and, if well designed, imposes only a relatively small increase in aerodynamic drag. At the 1968 German Grand Prix he became the first driver ever to use a full face helmet in Grand Prix racing.” Furthermore, he is still with us and had his 85th birthday this year, which his sons and other racers did up right, and is worth reading the online writeup of.
I like the Cougar more than the Mustang because it mixes muscle with luxury, too bad it’s on the west coast which would be too far away to drive a slipping transmission to Missouri. Nice car for a reasonable price.
I agree. I like Cougar better than Mustang.
Have it transported? Happens everyday. Did it for a living for 40 plus years.
If this were closer and I didn’t have a 1 car garage with a ’66 Tbird in it…
Good description and 19 photos. These are the kind of C.L. ads I like to read. Nice car. Nice price.
Anybody remember the Mercury commercials with the cat that would growl? As a kid,I thought that was the coolest thing to see
Need to inspect for rust under the vinyl top. This one isn’t the one I would get – it’s way too nice for me to bastardize it.
One of my college roommates had a 1967 with a 390. My girlfriend ( Now my Wife)had a 1967 Barracuda with a 273. The Cougar was nose heavy, but faster than the Barracuda. I drove a 1954 Austin Healey purchased form that roommate. It was replaced by a 1954 Porsche 356. Everyone was faster.
They had jobs, I didn’t.
I would take a cougar over a mustang any day of the week. This is a nice one with probably very little rust at. A great price.
If the tin worm has been easy on this Kat then i say well bought is in order to new owner.
This looks to be a screaming deal…Dan Gurney special + highly optioned…hopefully rust is not an issue…if only I had room in my garage…
nice ! but I’m looking for GT Convertible cougar let me know if you find one ! Thank’s
Never heard of a Cougar GT convertible.
Cougar convertibles where made from
1969-1973.
More info please.
The GT option was only available in 1967, 1968, and 1971 for Cougars. There was not a convertible body available in 1967-1968 and the GT option was only available for the 1971 standard hardtop Cougar. So no actual Cougar GT convertibles were made. The closest that you will get is that a GT Performance Group option was available in 1969. Mercury made 251 standard and 347 XR-7 convertibles that year. There were no GT badges on those cars.
Thanks, that’s what I thought.
There is a 1968 Cougar GT car 4-sale by me.
Started as a rust free California car.
Now back up into primer.
Body shop it is in , owner is retiring.
Needs the 390 engine.
I have a correct C8 390 GT engine complete.
With 4-speed. Iowa.
I use to have a 1970 E Cat.
Now 1970 Cobra 429 Torino
A 427 4 speed XR7G that we restored.
Do you have documentation to prove that this Cougar left the factory with a 427 and a 4 speed? Or was it a typo and you meant to say a 428 4 speed? All the information that I have including the Kevin Marti book COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS say that there were zero 427 4 speed Cougars built. Also our (Cougar Club Of America) research shows that all but one of the 1968 Cougars built with a 427 were GTEs. The other one was a regular XR-7, not an XR-7G. If you can prove something different we would be very interested in seeing it. Thank you.
That car belongs to a friend that had passed away and it was taken by a relative. Lost track after that happened.
Would you be able to provide any additional information about the car? The VIN would be great but I understand that is probably something you do not have. Perhaps you would be willing to share your friends’ name with me and I would then be able to see if we have any record of his ownership in our database. If you would rather not provide his name here on the open web you can email me directly at bosscat at dejazzd dot com. The car appears to be orange in your photo, was that the original color? Do you remember the interior color? Thank you for any additional information you are able and/or willing to provide.
Must be generating a lot of interest from the BarnFinds posting… Looks like the price went up to 7.5 K.
No convertibles till 69
Hey! thats my car! i bought her last November in my senior year of highschool i didn’t realize someone wrote an article on her. to answer questions the AC did not work, the heater also gave out so i installed classic auto airs perfect fit AC, it was rust free before i painted it eastwoods burnout blue and is now very rust free. the tranny was rebuilt by the seller before he sold it to me. after some tweaking the car is at 300hp at the wheels, the interior is actually nicer than pictured and has a new custom mahogany dash with thy WCCC LED kit for the interior and exterior. cragar ss wheels in 15×8. New Wilwood 4 piston brakes and an update on all suspention parts such as springs and bushing. shes been my daily since i bought her and has given me almost no trouble.
