Drag Racing Refugee: 1962 Chevrolet Corvette
Ouch, ouch and, more ouch is how I’d best describe this 1962 Chevrolet Corvette. Listed as a former X (experimental?) drag car project, perhaps it would be better defined as an “ex” X drag car. Whatever the case, this Corvette is located in Columbia Cross Roads, Pennsylvania and is available, here on eBay for a current bid of $7,100, reserve not yet met. There is a BIN option of $15,000 too.
Before C1 Corvettes entered the rarified air of uber collectibility, finding one modified for serious drag racing wasn’t an unusual occurrence. There’s no backstory on this one as it relates to its history, where it ran, who raced it, former powertrain, etc. The decal on the header is interesting as it looks like a Star of David surrounding an upraised fist but it’s not terribly clear. Neither is this car’s former moniker which is displayed across its flanks in a now degraded fashion. I can make out what looks like “LIBER..” and that made me immediately think of the late “Jungle Jim” Liberman but I believe he was Funny Car bound pretty early on.
The seller describes this car as follows: “Nose is original very nice, (the) body is modified for drag racing such as wheel wells radiused and floor and firewall are cut out; Frame was modified for drag racing -has some rust; doors, trunks all hinged operate like they should; deck lid modified with roll bar also hinged; windshield complete“. I’m not sure that I could concur on the “nice” condition of the original nose.
The interior is gutted save for the steering column, wheel, and passenger side grab bar. Yes, it’s a blank canvas but it will need absolutely everything, regardless of the direction that the next owner decides to pursue. And speaking of a blank canvas, that’s what’s going on in the power department as this ‘Vette is a roller – no engine or transmission. There’s no word as to what used to provide the get-up and go, but it’s probably irrelevant at this stage. There’s obviously suspension componentry and a rear axle hold up this Chevy’s four corners but the specifics are not revealed.
The seller concludes with, “I do not have the VIN plate or the title. NO VIN TAG or TITLE“. If the next owner is considering some sort of a drag racer redo, the missing VIN tag and title probably don’t matter. If plans center around the idea of reconstituting this Corvette into some sort of street prowler – the kind that requires registration, that’s going to be a problem. All in all, the current bid, and the BIN price seem a bit rich. If there was historical provenance or more thorough and specific details, along with better images, perhaps the numbers could be justified, but as it is, I don’t see it, how about you?

That thing was probably hot at one time, hence no VIN. It may be good for a few parts but it doesn’t have 15k worth of parts on it.

What the other guys said. Run, even if maybe it was Jungle Jim’s car. I live in PA and went through a ton of BS to register my 50 year old Corvette I bought in Jersey six years ago. And I had a clean title and all VIN labels etc were on the car. I love old Corvettes but this car s a total waste of money.
I believe this car was called the Liberator. Not sure if it has any real provenance of any kind.

Another perfect example of a guy who’s going to end up taking a lot less for this car (and I use the term “car” laughingly) than he wants for what is in the end, just a pile of junk.
About half a century ago I was taking automotive classes at a CC in Gresham Or. The head of the industrial dept deiced to give his 62 Vett to the auto club to make into a 1/4 mile special. Since I wasn’t was into racing and quit attending soon after I don’t whatever happened to it.
