EXCLUSIVE: 1958 Chevrolet Impala With An LT1!
When reader Dennis R bought this Impala, he had planned on putting it back together with an LT1 V8, but as things often go, life got in the way. He can’t stand to see it sit in his barn any longer, so it needs to go. It comes most of the parts needed to finish it, plus the original drivetrain if you’d rather put it back to original. What Makes It Special? This 1958 Impala needs a good home and someone to bring it back to life. Stored for the past 25 years, bought from the prior owner in its current state with good intentions to put it together, just got busy with other things. The doors, hood, fenders, trunk lid, bumpers, and glass are with the car. Most parts are in boxes, seats are available and need work, but likely some chrome bits may be missing.
Body Condition: Body is mostly solid, some rust, needs to be stripped down. Hood, fenders, doors are not attached, but are all from this body and have been fit previously. Hinges are also still with the car. The interior is incomplete and not installed. I know the headliner and carpet are missing. The seats need to be re-upholstered, not sure about the springs and frames, but may still be usable. Is also missing the steering wheel and steering column, but I have a tilt column and steering wheel from a ’64 Impala if interested. Taillights are included with the car.
Mechanical Condition: Does not run, but an LT1 with an R700 auto transmission are currently sitting on the frame. It was from a 1994 Caprice police cruiser. The original 283 and 2-speed power glide transmission are included. Chassis sits on all 4 wheels, rolls, and the tires hold air, so it can be pushed around easily.
These first-year Impalas really are cool cars. With the paint done and the trim reinstalled, it sure would look awesome. We would have a tough time deciding whether to finish the LT1 swap, go back to the 283 or install an LS. What would you do with this one?

Price doesn’t seem bad, myself, being a grey hair, would do it with a 327 or 348 and a 4 speed. Lots of options at this point, especially with the mill that’s in it. If u don’t like the mill that’s in it, sell it to offset your costs. Sure would make a great cruiser! good luck to the new owner.Any color including suede would look great on this 58!!

The LT1 was what really brought me here, especially in cool old ’58, but I was thinking of the original LT1 350 from a thousand years ago. Doggonnit!

The ’58 hardtops are neat cars. I’ve said it before, getting a car with a lot of the tear down and dirty work already done, for a good price, it well worth it. Two engines and transmissions, parts everywhere, what’s not to like.
My dad had a brand new ‘58 with the 348, dual quad carbs. He raced the local sheriff (his friend), whose police car was a new Plymouth, I believe. Anyway, dad beat him! I sure wish that car was still in the family…

Mostly I remember Toad driving that white ’58 thinking he was a big shot,,,on loan. He had all kinds of fun and trouble with that hot rod!

Great movie.I remember thinking at the time how square the whole era seemed compared to the then present time. Now I’m wishing I could time travel. I’ve had just about enough of the 21st century!
A ’58 with a 348 and manual would do it for me…….as a kid ,my long time inamorata’s parents had a ’58 convertible, I think it was an Impala.
Then she and her first husband has a ’64 SS when he was first commissioned.. We had it going on back in the day.

What gets me about that movie was that it was depicting an era only ten or eleven years prior…’62 compared to ’73 was vastly different, very different. Can’t say that about today looking back ten or even twenty years really,,,outside of the cell phones, ha!
One of my personal favorites especially after I saw the white one in American Graffiti when I was a teenager!!! The only problem is I don’t have a Star Trek transporter to beam the stuff across the country!!! All kidding aside it might be hard to get all the parts transported!! The hood and fenders are huge on this car!!!
