EXCLUSIVE: 1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA

UPDATE 8/03/2019 – Gavin was able to take more photos of his GTA for us, which you can find in the gallery below! So take another look at this Pontiac Project and make him an offer.

FROM 8/01/2019 – For just two years, Pontiac offered the Trans Am with the GTA option. The GTA moniker has been used on many cars over the years, but in the case of this Trans Am it means Gran Turismo Americano and was offered in 1987 and ’88 only. The option included some sweet gold mesh 16-inch wheels, the WS6 performance package, and the 5.7L 350 TPI V8. Reader Gavin B has decided to move this one along. It needs work, but for $3,500 it seems worth fixing up! You can find it in Fresno, California and Gavin can be reached via the form below.

With 175k miles, it’s going to need work, but Gavin states that it’s rust-free. It was running when it was parked and is said to be all original. We don’t get a good look at the engine bay or a close up of the interior, but it’s obviously going to need work. The paint is also going to need work, Gavin feels it should be repainted, but you might be able to repair it or at least make it look nice enough to drive.

Pontiac didn’t build many of these GTAs, just a little over 9k in total. This one is going to need a fair amount of work, but these are rapidly going up in value and it really should be saved! So, be sure to contact Gavin via the form below.

  • Asking Price: $3,500
  • Location: Fresno, California

Not that bad. Price seems to be right. Wouldn’t take much to make it a driveable classic. A half witt on here said it only has the 305. Like you might be able to actually handle a 350.

Yes, Actionjackson. They were offered from 87 to 92. I was going to say….. And I had one ! Wish I had it back. I had the digital dash. Not All came with 350 motor and in 87 they had to be ordered.

I own a 1988 gta 350 notchback. This car is a joy to drive. Price might be a little high for the amount of work needed.

I picked up an 88 gta with a 350 in it but was originally a 305. It has a rusty floor pan on the drivers side and I was told it also had a rusted frame around one of the transmission mount points. The car had been painted black although was originally red. I paid 1500 cad for it which I thought was a good deal as it is running and driveable.

I was gonna say about the number of years the GTA was offered as being incorrect. 1989 had the Buick GNX Turbo 6 cylinder 20th Anniversary Edition GTA. I still have my 1987 GTA black with Black interior, gold wheels and emblems. It came with the 350, auto, and power everything, and the Digital gauges. This car with the good wide tires, WS6 suspension, handles like it is on rails in the turns, with tires with plenty of tread, handled great in the pouring down rain. Worked with a kid in the 90’s who said he went for a ride in someone’s turbo ricer and he said “It was quick”. I said I’ll take you for a ride and he was talking to Jesus for that ride through the turns along with the acceleration. I think I left an impression.
